Lets talk tripod heads!
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:40:45 PM »
So I tried a pistol grip head but it just wasn't for me, so I'm going back to a pan head.  Whats everyone using these days?  This will be going on an Outdoorsmans medium tripod and its gonna be supporting an 80mm spotter.  Any suggestions?  I'm wanting something rock solid but on the lighter side.  It has to have seperate locks for pan and tilt.  The Outdoorsmans pan head is at the top of my list but am REALLY not wanting to spend that much.  I know there is stuff out there close to as good but for a better price.

Gitzo GH1720QR or GH2720QR Im too lazy to get up and look at this moment.  But very solid head.  I like the quick release to pop on or off my scope.  It locks down very tight with very little movement.

The pistol grip head is more for mounting a gun on it.  I second the manfrotto head.  Make sure it has fluid motion, very nice head.

Manfrotto's website says their fluid heads are only operate from 14-140 degrees.  Pretty certain I won't ever be hunting in 140 degrees but pretty certain I will be below 14 degrees often.  Can anyone speak on this?  I don't like my outdoorsman pistol grip.  It is a great product but just not my cup of tea.  I prefer a traditional panhead.

Im not big on the tripod ball head thing.  Base that on having a ball head mount for my boat GPS/Finder.  Hard to lock that sucker down.

What did you end up getting for a head?

I just ordered a manfrotto MVH502AH.  It should be here next week.  This head goes down to -4.

Last weekend a buddy and I were aging with his new Cam Ranger motorized tripod head. We put his 1D on it and set out some Bark butter to attract the blue jays.
We sat inside the house watching the World Cup final, and controlled the Cam Ranger with his iPad.
It was a blast!

I use the Manfrotto 222 for my Swaro spotter and find it very fast and easy to use. :dunno:

For the camera I use a Sirui G-20X ball that works very nice too.

Is the head of your new Manfrotto a pan head or a pistol grip?  I'm looking to replace my bogen pistol grip head on my big Manfrotto the,  and weight isn't an option for me.

Got my new Outdoorsmans head last week!  It was painful to drop the coin but like every piece of Outdoorsmans equipment I buy, the pain is forgotten quickly once I use it!  This head is super light, very easy to use, and as all their other stuff, its all machined aluminum so there is no slop, flex,  or creep.  It isn't a fluid head so freezing isn't an issue.  It has individual locks for pan and tilt and it locks down solid and doesn't move off target when you lock it down.  Well worth the money!

Did your window mount have a 3/8 stud or did you have to modify it.  I just got my adapter in the mail today and my dang window mount has a 1/4 stud.  I took my window mount apart and was just getting ready to drill and tap it for 3/8.

Man I really like the looks of those heads.  For the window mount I see you are putting A quick release adapter on your window mount.  Do you also have to put a quick release adapter on your head or does the head come with a quick release plate that will fit into your window mount adapter?

The head and the adapter both use the same mounting plates.  I don't think there is a better lighweight panhead for hunting on the market.  Its small, lightweight, not temperature sensative, and as solid as rock.  It does cost a bit more than most.  Buy once cry once right :yike:

I told the guy at Outdoorsmans what I was going to do with it and he said he would put an adapter in the quick detach.  They are like $5 or $6 from Outdoorsmans.   When I got the part, I could directly attach it to my window mount.
