"It takes patience to kill"  is something my hunting partner told me a long time ago, and that is very true when talking blacktails!  Great book to check out and nice bucks 98520.

It's a good book, but to follow Boyd's methods, you pretty much have to scout year around, and to hunt his way you need a LOT of patience. More patience than I have.

Not to sound too cliche but.... if it was easy everyone would be doing it... (regularly killing big blacktails)  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

By the way I don't kill big blacktails. Like you, I lack patience.

Exactly. Which is why I said, it takes more patience than I have. Of course I could probably muster up a bit more patience for these blacktails if the population wasn't just one tenth (my guesstimate) of what it used to be. I'm hunting mule deer this year.   :IBCOOL:

I agree on your population guesstimate. Unfortunately I have the sickness and must pursue these Vile creatures. However I'm fortunate enough to hunt all three sub-species every year so that takes some of the sting away when I get skunked chasing big blacktails...

Well, it's likely that I will be hunting blacktails in the late muzzleloader season. I hope not! But if I don't get lucky I may still have an un-punched deer tag when that season comes around. Guess I better get busy and figure out where I want to put up a tree stand.

The late season is when I like to hunt them. It's Just not the same chasing those vermin when it's sunny and warm :chuckle: :chuckle:. I save the nice weather for mulies. Then of Course I chase the whitetails in Idaho at the end of November in the snow... but those schizophrenic deer are a different story...

 :yeah:

Looks like there are two being offered @ $3.00 plus $3.99 shipping, then they start going up from there.

I'm going after blacktails mostly because I hunt close to home, because I can't take time off. I love a challenge, but it's getting to be ridiculous. My only shot in 5 years at a really nice buck was exactly where Boyd and everybody else said I shouldn't be looking. I was on my way home from a morning hunt, about 10:30 in the morning and saw a doe, then a second doe in the middle of a huge clear cut. This was on a cold, sunny morning on the first day of late buck. That's when the monster stood up. I'll never forget it and still have dreams about him. I was up wind and couldn't close the gap. He was one of two guys I had been seeing on scouting trips, easy to find in the spring and summer. I only find peace in the knowledge that his genetics have been spread all over.....but I haven't seen him or what may be his brother since.

I would say the vast majority of large Blacktail bucks are killed in clear cuts in this state. Nice to be able to hunt the rut during rifle season.

I guess I have to put up my trail cam in the front yard. The big bucks almost come up to the front porch.
In a couple of months, I should have some good shots.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.
