Here are some of the better photos of our trip to Kodiak, I went with my wife and parents. We spent 4 days fishing. The first day proved to be by far the worst weather wise but the best fishing day we had. We ended up with 6 kings between 20 and 40 lbs. We had on two others in the 35+ pound range. One of them fell victim to a kelp bed and the other to a bad knot. We also had two other takedowns that didn’t stick. On day 2 we awoke to much clearer skies and we were finally able to see how gorgeous and pristine Kodiak Island really is, fishing we went 4 for 4 with the fish ranging between 25 and 49 (which was our largest). Day 3 was a nicer day yet. However we were only able to manage 1 fish, but it was the largest my wife has ever caught at 36 lbs. The area we fished for kings was behind and island and well within a bay so we were well protected from the wind. However the wind on the outside of this bay blew pretty for the first 3 days preventing us from going for halibut. Finally on day 4 the winds laid down and we proceeded to the halibut grounds we managed our 4 halibut between 20 and 40 pounds pretty quickly and even picked up a few smaller “feeder” kings trolling around the halibut grounds. The trip and accommodations were amazing and Kodiak is a truly gorgeous place. We saw whales everywhere we looked, saw a couple of small Kodiak bears between the airport in the lodge, mountain goats, Sitka blacktail deer, sea otters, etc. The most annoying part of the whole trip was the concentration of pacific cod located here. They’re worse than dogfish (except that they don’t destroy your leader) we were constantly having to deal with cod and Pollack in as little of 20 feet of water while we were trolling for our kings. After getting our halibut on the 4th day we picked up a quick limit of the largest black seabass I’ve ever seen. They easily averaged 8-10 lbs. Our average day of fishing consisted of being on the water by 630 am and fishing until about 3. Long days for sure, and I’m not exactly sure how many hours of daylight there were as I never saw it get dark. I’m sure it did at some point , I just never saw it. I definitely plan on going again at some point.

Kodiak is definitely a place I would like to fish kings some day. We have family friends from there and every year my dad tells me of a 70+ pounder they caught. Rediculous. Been there once for commercial fishing and once we went to afognak for elk and fished the buskin.

Nice fish! Chiniak?
One of my best friends moved up to Kodaik and ran a charter... took advantage of that...

There is a great average king size- with a sprinkling of the 60+ers. We caught some unbelievable chunk 20+ pound silvers. Great for halibut, lings, etc. For some reason it doesn't get the publicity that Sitka and other places get, but it should imo.

Gosh thats some awesome fishing. I sure hope I get the chance to catch a few footballs like those out of Sekiu this year. Sure want that adrenaline rush. Awesome fishing my friend. Well done

9/10 times anything that big at Sekiu you'll have to let go because it's a Nate!!! It's happened to me enough where I hardly salmon fish there anymore. I sure miss the old days of being able to keep what you caught at Sekiu.

IMHO, I think a lot of the bigger Kodiak fish are Canadian, Skeena river or maybe Rivers Inlet fish rather then Kenai fish.
I guided off P.O.W. Is in S.E. AK for 20 years and the mature kings we caught tended to be shorter and girthier then Kenai kings of the same weight. I've seen a Lot of 40-70 pound Kodiak fish and they seem very similar in proportion to the fish we catch in S.E. then they do to Kenai kings.
Just my uneducated guess.
