how many points did it take poll
« on: June 14, 2014, 09:30:11 AM »
What quality or bull elk tag did you draw and how many points did it take? Just doing my own research on how many points it takes to draw something good. I'm hearing alot of bad reports from people with a lot of points that can't draw!

Why not look at real data and see for yourself rather than polling a handful of people on a website?

http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits/results/points/2013.php

The 2014 data will be posted before too long, but it wont differ too much from 2013.

I don't like using the word "take." (as in how many points does it "take")

I think it's misleading to people who don't understand how the draw system works. It implies that once you reach a certain number of points, that drawing a permit is virtually guaranteed. That is not the case. It's a random draw. The points help but don't guarantee anything.

Look at the data at the link that Alan provided. You'll see that lots of people with lots of points did not draw.

You have to remember too, that each year as your points increase by one, so does everbody else's.

Bobcat nailed it.   You can draw with one, 18 points doesnt guarantee anything

Yup. Only way to help beat it is to be flexible and apply for lots of different hunts. If you're holding out for one particular tag with 1 in 10 odds, expect it to take awhile. Apply for 10 hunts with 1 in 10 odds (different species, multiple states, etc) and you should have something good most years.

Bottom line is there are way too many applicants for way too few permits. There are two things that would help out.

One, limit hunt choices to one.  The majority of people complaining about not drawing are putting for the premier hunts in each category. Right now, with multiple hunt choices, you're crazy not to put in for a premier hunt as your first choice, with a realistic hunt as your second.  So all of the low point holders are (or should if they're smart) putting Blue's type elk hunts first choice, diluting top point holders' odds. With a single hunt choice, a low point holder may as well go buy a lottery ticket than put in for a blues hunt.  They'd probably have a better chance of winning the lottery and purchasing an auction tag.  BUT at the same time they do have a chance, albeit a small one, which you don't want to take away.

Two, if they'd just add 1 week long rut permit hunt for deer and elk for each GMU, they'd spread the applicants out over FAR more hunt options and relieve the odds on many, if not all hunts. Look at a hunt like Wahkiakum (quality bull), where there is 1 permit and that one permit gets over 200 applicants to use one of their two hunt choices on it.  Of course certain areas are going to attract more people than others, but a rut hunt is a great hunt no matter what unit you're in.  A chance (50%ish?) at a hunter taking one additional buck/bull that would otherwise not be isn't going to affect the game populations in the units, and what it would do for draw odds would without a doubt in my mind be worth it.

I think the part that a lot of people don't realize is the way it usually works is you have a very small group of point holders at the top and the masses are at the bottom with low to no points and odds are it will be one of the masses that draw the tag. If you have one person with 18 points, 18 squared is 324 chances in the draw. Then you have 1000 people with no points, 1000 chances, odds are someone with no points will get the tag. By the time you figure in the masses at low points that 18 points are not the guarantee you thought. With the most points your odds are way better than any single low points applicant but the tag will often go to the masses at the low end.

I got Margaret archery bull w/ 5 points, and I'm pretty pumped about it.  I say screw Weyerhauser, and I'm headed high.  I'm not trying to set any records, in fact I might shoot a spike if it taunts me long enough.   8)
