Mt Spokane South Antlerless Moose - What to expect??
« on: June 14, 2014, 09:38:03 AM »
After 17 years of applying for just about every permit except doe tags, I finally drew a Mt. Spokane South antlerless moose tag. Now being from the west side and being a working class guy, I have NO, repeat NO, experience with moose hunting or with the Unit. I am going to spend my fair share of time researching and will make a trip or two over before the hunt but was wondering if there was anyone who has had the tag or hunts there who could tell me what to expect. I realize this is a COW tag and I am going to shoot the first full size cow I see but I would be interested in what to expect as far as amount of moose and such things. Also, I have heard about Inland Empire Permits? Not sure where to get one or if I even need to buy one for this hunt. When I first drew this permit I was on the fence about it but the more I think about it the more excited I have become. I am starting to realize that not being a rich man this may be my only chance to EVER hunt a moose!!!!! Anyway, any information would be great. Even if it is just where a guy could set up camp and what time or year would be good. Thanks in advance.

You will want the IEP pass. Each person in your hunting party will need to purchase one. But they're relatively cheap.

Several years ago when my dad drew the hangman antlerless tag, we camped at the KOA in Spokane Valley. There was another hunter staying there who had the Mount Spokane tag.

90% of the moose are shot from the road.   They are pretty much in the whole area.  The pass was 40 I believe, the one I bought last year was about that anyway.   As mentioned, all in the party except minors will need one.  You can get what you want from the hunt.  Moose will be 90% nocturnal until mid September.  Big long blacked hair critters dont like to stand in the sun much until it cools.  I realize its the PC thing to say scout scout scout, but it really wont help much for your fall success, which should almost be guaranteed.   Enjoy your tag and make sure you have a big freezer.

I have a partner who also drew this tag. From the Moose Area 1 map it looks to be a pretty confined area and I am guessing it is mostly in that Inland paper area? Is that permit area sections of logged off areas like we have in western Washington? I will try to look at it on the google earth site. Sounds like lots of glassing in that area if it is that way it is would be the way to go. Getting on from the road sounds great if possible. Appreciate any information.....Thanks......Les

My son drew the  cow moose tag 4 years ago and we hunted the Thompson Creek drainage by Newman Lake, we went over early in the season to do a glorified scouting trip, The first thing we noticed was that once we hit the IEP land there was moose sign everywhere.

We did a little glassing and drove a couple roads, the kid shot a big dry cow about 2 in the afternoon, we were back home by 9 that evening.

He just drew his second moose tag last week for the same unit, this time "any moose", he is going to hold out for a nice bull if we can locate one.

Good luck on your hunt I don't think you will have any trouble filling your tag if you have a few days to hunt, there are lots of roads in the area so access isn't a problem, we found a lot of the roads are bermed off where they cross creeks in the upper canyons of Thompson Cr. But you can drive around to the other side of the berms by going back down to the main roads and coming up the other side of the canyons.

I hate to say this but the closer to the road you drop her the better.  Moose are big big animals.  Like others have said it could be a pretty quick hunt.

I live here in spokane and hunt thompson creek every year, you should have no problem getting moose, the problem is after you pull the trigger, I help a family from sedro wooly wa last year fill their tag it was a 43 in bull. that was the 4th group that I showed where to go. I bought a bunch of mule tape after the last one cause they all dont stand in the road and are massive laying on the ground. so if you need any direction or if I can help in any way let me know. the permit is 40 for a single person or 60 for a family and you can buy them at whites boots in spokane. pm if you wish
