That one friend
« on: June 22, 2014, 07:59:21 PM »
Is it just me or does everyone have that one friend, who goes to all of your secret spots that you found and calls them "ours". Then brings his dad and brother up to the same road that he knows you and your buddy are already hunting? And then even walks with you with noisy a$$ snow pants for rain pants? Then shoots your buck from under you. How do you counter this friend from being in your sweet spots? End rant.

You just test them out on one sorta sweet spot, then gauge whether your gonna show them your real sweet spots.

I counter it simply…….the very, very few people I hunt with, don't do that. And if I am ever in a situation where I take a "newbie" or a potential "new" hunting acquaintance, i lay all the cards/ground rules on the table. And I never take a someone new to a "favorite" or old spot, at least until they pass muster, which may take years. I know people like the ones you are describing and have encountered several, but they are typically "one-time" hunting encounters. I guess for me, bottom line is unless they are family, or someone I've hunting with for several years, I just avoid 'em. Nothing worse than seeing someone in one of your spots, when you thought "they'd never do that to you".

What makes it worse is they literally tailed me to my hunting sport and hour and a half away!

He's no friend.  Better called a leach or parasite.  Some people like leaches....

I don't.
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

I have friends, I have hunting buddies, and I have friend's who I hunt with. Sounds like this cat needs to just be a friend.

Sit him down and tell him what he's doing.

I countered it by switching to archery.....

And after the past few years i have decided to not invite anyone to hunt with me at my place...
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I agree.  I had a friend that did this.  He was new to hunting and genuinely didn't know he was doing something wrong or pissing me off.  He quit once we talked about it and went elsewhere when we weren't hunting together.

 :dunno:
So I guess there is an unwritten rule that you don't go hunt an area that a friend took you to for a hunt. How much area does that cover? A mile? The drainage? The county?

What if it is a large area and there a 100 or so other guys who have the same secret spot?

I have had the same thing happen with fishing holes. It bugs me a little, but it is a free country and everyone wants wants to get the game or fish.

I did have some family members that didn't like me hunting a huge area that they introduced me to even though I was hunting archery and they hunt modern firearm. The area was kind of overrun by archery hunters too. Lots of other firearm hunters during their season too. It is a big state so I found and am finding other areas to hunt.
