.17 HMR scope
«
on:

A little bird told me I'm getting a new .17 HMR from Santa.
I'm going to put a Cabelas .17 Riflescope on it. Should I get the 3X12 ($49) power scope or the 6X18 ($79)power scope.

Personally I'd go 3-12 or even 3-9 for that matter. But thats just me. What are you using it for hunting or targets? or both. I just think that you want a lower powered scope for hunting

It's mostly going to be my Montana Prairie dog gun and the gun I use to gun my kids started shooting. I am leaning to toward the 3X12. I shouldn't be shooting over 100-200 yards very often.

I still go 3-12. I also wouldn't shoot any more than 200 yards with a .17 HMR. It just doesn't pack enough punch. I was shooting squirells with a .17 Mach2 at around 125 yards and it wasn't killing them. Granted it is a little slower. That light bullet just doesn't pack the punch. But you should be good to 200 yards or so. Just my

Craig, I have that exact same gun. I looked at the .17 scopes and decided to get a lower priced Bushnell scope made for larger caliber rifles. My scope is 3x9 and has the silver finish and looks killer on that rifle. I have never had good luck with scopes made for rimfire guns. One little bump and the scope is off. That gun is deadly accurate. I have killed many of ground squirrels at over 200 with not much for hold over.

I'll throw another mueller recommendation out.
I'd definitely choose them over the cabelas scope, or the sweet 17. Much better quality, not much more dough.
I have a 4-12x40 on my HMR and it's plenty.
Don't expect to have great results with the HMR at 200yds....wind drift and loss of velocity (no more explosive reaction!) at that distance really cuts down the kill-factor.
I hate scopes with a minimum of 6x for anything other that target work. No fun IMHO.
Enjoy your hummer!

I too have that rifle, only blue with the wood stock. I put a 3x9x40 tasco on mine. The tasco scope is clear and dose a great job! Paid around $60 for it. Probably what ever scope you chose will be fine. You will be very happy with that rifle, Tack Driver! Have fun!

I bought a Cabelas scope for my 17HMR and it was garbage.
Looked like my 4 yr old assembled it.
Unuseable at high power.
Worst flare of any scope I've ever owned.
They did take it back and I bought another Swift Premier.
Much better glass.

I tried a Cabelas scope on my 30/30 and yes, it was garbage. Wouldn’t hold zero and unusable beyond 100 yards.
You might try a Simmon’s 22 Mag, it’s a very good scope for about $60.
