My CVA Optima NorthWest!
« on: August 13, 2014, 03:35:58 PM »
Came in yesterday on the big brown truck.

I set mine up differently and used Williams Peep sight and factory Durasight orange front sight. Great little shooter with 90gr Pyrodex Pellets and 295gr Powerbelts. I'll post a range report later on.

Range report and tips to keep fail to fires on first cap strike, will also be coming along. I figured something out today and change one thing on the range.

Got her all cleaned and lubed today, decided to try her out with a simple 90 grain pyrodex pellet load with the 295gr powerbelt HP Aerotip at 50 yards. I did swab between shots. I made my own swabbing solution using a 6oz bottle and filled it with 3/8" deep amonia, 3/8" deep pinesol and topped it off with water. It dries fairly quick and really cuts through the pyrodex grime.

First 3 shots, shots 2 and 3 are extremely hard to make out but they are the upper hole.

Shot 6 went up a little higher. I should have stopped at #5 but was having to much fun!

I still have to make some adjustments, but will do so once I switch back to Goex.

Did the peep sight mount in the existing scope base holes? Or did it require modification? Model # of the peep if you don't mind

Yes. Existing scope mounting holes. I went a step further and added a ghost ring sight in place of the aperture. All this can be found in the Williams catalog or maybe their website. I ordered my stuff thru Brownell's.
Pay attention to the footnotes on the front sight ramp height.

Looks like the way to go on the Wolf, not overly impressed with the factory sights, and not too good with glasses, thanks Also did score the RWS musket caps today, so it begins   :)

Nice to hear you scored the caps. I wasn't impressed with the sights either but for the price point I understand. The Williams sights are a big improvement.

I have the exact same setup; Optima V2 and Williams peep sight. I also purchased the Williams front fire sight and fire sight hood. Word to the wise: The fire sight does not come with a screw that is recessed enough to fit in the pre-drilled hole of the sight, it covers the entire target at 100yds and the hood that is made for it will not fit. As for the Peep sight itself, I had to put two shims (old credit card) under it to even hit paper at 100yds. Without the shims and with the elevation maxed out I was hitting 8" low at 100yds with 300gr Hornady sst sabots and 300gr powerbelts with 100 grains of loose 777. BTW, the Williams fire sight and the factory sight are the same height. Also, I tried to shoot some 777 disc powder through it and it would not ignite on multiple occasions (and yes, everything was clean and dry). After shimming I am hitting 1.5" groups with 300gr powerbelts and 2.5" groups with sst's at 100 yds with 777. What are some recommended elk loads anyone may have to try for this set-up in Washington?

Plus one on the shimming. I have ordered the .455 height front fire sight. I can get level at 50 yards and dropped 1.5" at 80. So I have shimmed the rear sight with a thick Teflon water pump gasket. Haven't been out to try it yet to see where I end up. I'm hoping dead nuts even at 100 yards but I will take 80-90.

Ok, now I'm confused, with the Williams peep or the ghost ring, do they both have to be shimmed? Or only with the front factory sight being changed ?? I may not be reading this correctly ??
Thanks

-When switching the rear factory sight out for a Williams sight you need to get a new front sight as well.
-The front bead needs to be lower (closer)) to the barrel.
-Often there isn't enough height to the rear ramp to get your rifle to get your shots up where you need them on the paper.
- even when ordering the new front sight that is shorter it may not fix this.
-So some of us have had to make a shim to put beneath the new rear sight and the barrel to fix the problem and get our shots to hit the paper in the right place.
You can always call Williams and talk with them. The quality of the Williams sight is worth the hassle. At least I think so.
I hope that clears it up for you.

On the Wolf, you MAY have to shim the rear sight upward a bit with thin plasic coke bottle shims.

The Optima, Accura V2 work perfect without any shimming and that is with using a FACTORY sight.

Not my optima. It definitely needed shimming to even hit paper with the factory sight.
