Archery true spike bull?
« on: August 11, 2014, 07:48:43 PM »
Ok so I'm thinkin of buying an eastern tag and archery hunting around one of our properties for true spike. I've hunted with rifle for many years so I know the land by how would a guy spike hunt archery. Calling would seem to draw bigger bulls. Run and gun seems a little out of it for spikes. Is my only other option stand hunting? What have you guys done in the past that's been successful for you? Thanks for the info ahead of time!

Cow call, run and gun, stand hunt, all the above have worked. Look for cows and you'll find spikes if the rut is like normal ( not last year it was really late) they will be just off to the side of the main herds trying to be close to mom.

True spike bull with archery is tough,  I thought I could pull it off in the Bumping for spike only but was unsuccessful for two years when they closed it for cows. I finally just sat on a well traveled trail, the problem was the true spike has to be in range, broadside, etc etc.   Good luck,  if you kill a true spike bull in an area that only allows that you have accomplished something.

Cow call, cow call, cow call, in 30 yrs of serious cow call ing I have called quite a few in this way along with cows and enormous bulls you never know what will come in unless a larger bull answers your cow call. 2 yrs ago I was trying for a fat cow and cow called 3 true spikes in at the same time. I took the last one in line. This was from a tree stand

 :yeah:

and expect them to come in silent.  I've had one pop his head up from the other side of the bush only 3' away. It was really thick and I he didn't make a sound.

true spike hunting can be very frustrating for bow hunters its true you need the right animal and the right shot ,good luck they are very tasty critters but once its all said and done don't mistake it for the neighbor's skinned st. Bernard because that's about what they add up to. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

What really sucks is when you have a forked or brow tined spike at 20 broadside, and you will.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

That spike is last years baby, if she lost this years calf, that spike is back with mom.  Cow call and watch your edges.
