anyone hunt the Thompson Crk IEP area?
« on: August 21, 2014, 04:05:45 PM »
I started a new job this year and have no vacation and no set schedule so Im thinking of Getting an IEP paper permit for days where I have short notice and want to get hunting quick. I live in Liberty lake so I can be there in 20-30 minutes. I know there is a ton of land that can be accessed by using Thompson creek road.  Ive hunted IEP paper land up on Mt. Spokane and ive been unimpressed.  I have access to private land on Mt. Spokane and know plenty of other areas to hunt so this likely wont be my primary hunting spot.  Im just wondering if its worth buying the permit to hunt this particular area.  Ive also got the multiseason tag so should be able to somewhat avoid the circus that is the modern opener.  Any insight would be appreciated.

I hunted up there with my son just a few times when he could only hunt in washington. There is a ton of area that we never even looked at But from what we saw it was not real impressive. It did remind me of the iep on mt spokane which sounds like you werent impressed with either. He ended up getting his deer pretty quick in another area so I am no expert on the area at all. I think if someone really committed to spending some time there you would find good hunting because you are right you can access a lot of land. We did not see very many deer but also did not see a lot of people up there and it was modern firearm season so that was a bonus. Not seeing a lot of hunters and having a lot of land to hunt seems like you could get into some good stuff with a little homework. It might be polluted with hunters but we just got lucky going on some uncrowded days dont know. We will mainly hunt Idaho this year but if he could only hunt there I would probably scout it some more.  Wish I had more info for ya but at least its something.

thompson creek has tons of big bucks, but it also is very thick with brush, so you really have to put in your time to find honey holes, I killed several bucks up there over 170. lots of road hunters up there with not alot of roads. you can see some of the bucks I have shot on my crazy antler post on the deer hunting forum also. here is a couple others and trail cam pics from there

Thanks for the feed back guys.  Great bucks bear nature! Just looking at google earth and the amount of roads in there it looks like if you got out and put in the time you can be on some good bucks.  I also know there are some great genetics in that general area.  We will see how early archery goes.  I haven't been able to check my cams in about a month but I didn't have anything Im excited about to that point.  Ill probably hunt some private land on Mt. Spokane right off the bat, check the cams and go from there.  I caught on with the railroad at the beginning of the year and have seen a ton of Mulie bucks and a few bruisers close to some public land so might give that a try as well.  Im scrambling this year, usually by this time ive go September planned out.  Maybe I'll get lucky with this change of pace.  Good luck to you guys in the upcoming season.

Really good area if you put the work in. Kind of a big woods feel... If you are looking for a good buck, this is a great area, but if you want to see a lot of deer, it would not be my first choice. Depends on what your looking for.

Great area, lots of animals. Have to get off the roads though cause there are usually a fair amount of people as well.
