The Cotten ball with Vaseline works great. Making more to fill into straws today

Check out trioxane. IMO it's better then the above, and way less messy.

Lights when wet, and extremely cheap.

Make sure the para cord you carry is small enough to be used as emergency shoe/boot laces!

That's a good one I learned some time ago. Being miles from your rig with a busted (or in one case burnt) shoe lace is no good.

Yes, remember your license and tags before leaving the house!  Know more than one that learned that lesson :chuckle:

no I meant tagging lol, But yes I have not yet purchased a license or tag... depressing year :'(
My lesson learned is not from this year, when I was 15 my Dad and I made the drive from Prosser all the way up to Spokane. We stayed the night at my Uncles, the next day we went north to hunt the late rifle season. When we got to the area we planned to check our zeroes we realized the rifle case was at home :yike: went home got it. Next day we go hunt near kettle falls, on the way back to my uncles we stop at a hunter check station and I realize I left my license and tag in my other pants at my Uncles. Still here about this every hunting season

How about keeping you keys for your rig someplace very very safe. Getting back to the truck thinking your going home but your not can be a real bummer. Never loose your keys in the field!!!

Have your weapon in hand and calls at the ready even on your predawn walk in.  The least amount of movement the best if you stumble into huntable wildlife and need to react quickly on your way in.

Bring something (benadryl) for hornet stings when you stumble across an undreground nest. Thankfully it was early in the morning and they were not very active.

I carry the longest set of leather shoe strings I can for shoes, and other things that come up.

Emergency pain relive is one the eluded me a few times.

I also learned to leave the cotton behind. Specifically - cotton underwear  :yike:
that stuff can freeze your buns off. Now I go with an unfurnished basement all the time. Sure ended the flashback nightmares from some colder-than-buck-naked hunts!  :chuckle:

Be very careful pulling the tubes off of your water filter.  I pulled on mine this year and ripped the whole fitting off.   Luckily someone else was with me and had a filter.

I still take too much food. It seems like I don't eat as much when I'm backpacking. Will be working on it once again. Switched to Caribou game bags and use Havalon Knives which cut weight in that department.

- Bring zip lock bags for the heart & liver, having to wrap them in a t-shirt and throwing them into your backpack is never the best idea but 'cha gotta do what 'cha gotta do

- Hunt with confidence. Remember to pack a string for your tag, sometimes you actually get lucky :chuckle:

- Eat breakfast & don't forget snacks when you stay out all day. Made that mistake opening morning, wont make it again.

I tried some type of oatmeal packages this year.  They come in a small cup type package with a lid.  I know they aren't the Quaker Oats brand but I can't remember the brand, maybe Umpqua?  You just pour hot water in and place the lid back on and wait.  They are very light weight and they aren't too sweet.  I can't stand Quaker Oats brand stuff as it is typically way too sweet.
