New here and to WA
« on: September 03, 2014, 02:29:33 PM »
Hello all. I am new here and to WA. I am a North East Whitetail hunter and I am temporarily in WA for 2 years. I would like to experience hunting deer here in the beautiful west. Where would be a good area for me to start looking? I know I am late for scouting, and I have limited time to hunt. My work schedule is really busy, 4:30 am-6pm 7 days and then 2 off. So as you can see my time is limited. I am not looking for secret spots or to muscle in on someone, just looking for a place to start looking. Any help you fellas could give me would be greatly appreciated. I am in NW WA.

Welcome to the forum!  If you are in NW WA you will only be hunting blacktails.  Once you move onto the east side you will run into the mule deer and whitetails when you go even further east.  Okanogan area has some beautiful mule deer.  Might be worth a scouting trip.  If you plan on staying local you had best ask someone other than me, I have never hunted for blacktail or even hunted on the west side for that matter.

bkelly, did you make a typo?  You say you're in NW WA but your location listed below your name says Vancouver.   :dunno:

My bad.  I didn't even think Vancouver, BC.  I was thinking Vancouver, WA.

Good luck.  :hunter:

Not real familiar with areas that far north, but I'd give some of the local lumber companies a call and see if they have land open to hunt, and if so, when the cleared some of it. Hancock, at least down south allow walk in hunting, so you have to park at the gate and hike or ride a bike in. Check the regs for your area and see what the requirements are as far as points and all that, then go out and hunt the clear cuts in timber land from first light until about 8-9am when the shade moves out of the draws and depressions. Give yourself an hour or so to get up in there before first light, so you can be waiting when the sun comes up. Blacktail are usually down in the draws and depressions in the shade. If you hunt an area with anterless as well as some sort of point requirement, you should have no problem at all finding a doe to fill the freezer. If you're after a trophy, I can't help ya. Biggest buck I've stumbled across was a 2 pt, but I don't usually hunt for deer, just come across tons of them while hunting elk. The fact that you work kind of weird days is a benefit, it'll allow you to get out on some weekdays when there are less people around to screw up your hunt. Came across 8 of them Sat while sidehilling, 3 within 60yds. I was sidehilling because 2 guys had appeared on the ridge line above me and my buddy while we were hunting elk and scared off the 2 cows we had coming towards us, so we decided to scare up some deer.
