College Student needing hunting area Near Ellensburg
« on: December 13, 2008, 11:32:35 PM »
Im a new student at Central Washington University. I have hunted my whole life on the west side of the mountains and need help finding waterfowl areas. Maybe could even use a hunting buddy to show me the ropes for this side. Can anyone help?

Find a landowner with a corn field and see if they will give you access.  Its a stretch but you never know.  I also see quite a few geese out that way.

I went to Central. Used to go shoot ducks occasionally on the pond in Thorp. You can wade around the north end.(or maybe used to be able to wade around it) Throw a few decoys out. Never did great but, there were a few days we had some decent shooting....

Just go on the road behind the fruit stand and new am/pm. May want to double check it is still open to shooting.

Ditto on the pond near Thorp.  I used to hunt that even without decoys because it was such a popular area for the duck.  The water flows there or it used to and durring a freeze leave good feed and rest for the feathered critters.  There are deer in there too.  I caught the largest Yakima Cutthroat of my life out of that pond.  I've also landed a few Kings in there too believe it or not.   If I lived there I wouldn't tell you this on a public forum but since I don't enjoy it your adventurous enough to wade the head of the lake.

That was a great pond but Central bought it from the state for a research area and it is closed to hunting now. I would offer up some advice but I quite hunting ducks because I lost all the private property I had permission to hunt, and I don't really have the money to be traveling to Moses or lower valley, so I have no idea about where to hunt now.

Probably out of luck on ducks in E-burg. Never has been too hot duck spot anyways. Anyone know anything about the ponds that are fed by the river which are before exit 106? Usually have ducks sitting on them. I have always wanted to drop into one with my float tube...never have done it. Probably need to have someone drop you off on the hwy. Might be too close to the road for the state patrols liking...

i believe that the ponds closest to exit 106 are owned by the gravel company which cannot be hunted.. the others are Yakima River run off which could only be accessed if you float down river and get out. I have had many thoughts of jumping the barrier of the highway and shooting all the ducks and geese that are ALWAYS in there.

That is exactly what I have thought many times. Get dropped off on the hwy and jump the fence. There are always birds in there.....
