Comparing an OIL sheep to "vermin".   I don't think so.

Haha not really, I'm just noting that a similar scenario with cougars and the guys a hero.  Personally I do think this dude should be held accountable, and i think we would be a lot better off if every arrow or bullet that passed through a cougar came out the other side and landed in another.

My dad was down in Mexico a few years back hoping to get a 30" buck or one that scored really well.  He and his guide were out and saw a shooter, my dad fired, the guide said shoot again you missed, so he did.  Got down there and there were two bucks side by side in the bushes.  One met each of his criteria and, luckily, there he could just pay for a second tag.  He got a gorgeous double pedestal mount out of it and had to pay for one less hunt.   :chuckle:

I do believe a person should make sure of the target and what is beyond/behind it though.

I once glassed three rams that were less than 150 yards away.  Took me nearly an hour to decide if one was different than the other two.  After I shot they bumped into one another getting to heck and gone.  Luckily my shot was true and the ram I chose went down within view.  When the other two came out into the open again there was blood on each ram.  No chance of hitting either of them as I made sure each was clear before I took the shot.  But I could definitely see how someone who thought they had wounded one would have taken another shot.

Sounds like the hunter did the right thing and turned himself in.  He should receive some benefit of the doubt when it comes down to sentencing, I think.  Could definitely have been avoided.  But crap happens.  Doesn't mean you are a bad person.  Just did something stupid in the heat of the moment.

Punishment?  Absolutely!  Thrown into the fire?  I want more details before I agree with that!

I agree with you radsav. The full story of what happened isn't even out. The guy made a mistake, turned himself in, and will be repaying his debt to society. I guess that's one benefit he gets of doing the right thing after the wrong thing. At least he had the stones to make the phone call, instead of walking off. :twocents:

Probably doesn't really matter, but I'd like to know if the second was was much bigger than the first.  I personally don't think he should be able to keep either of the rams, though will resere my judgement till all the details come out...

This isn't that much different than the guy who takes a shot and can't find the animal.  Maybe he hit it, maybe not, but then he shoots another one.  Some would do this and think nothing of it.

The guy did make a mistake and owned up to it.  It isn't too hard to do, take the shot and then all hell breaks loose.  Doing the right thing requires you to finish off the animal, so he should have shot twice - just at the same animal.

He could have easily bailed out and they never would have found it - or been able to trace it back to him.  It sounds very plausible that he did his best and then when he found out he screwed up he did the right thing and turned himself in.

It is easy to say never shoot unless you are 100% and never miss the double lung shot.  That doesn't reflect reality in every case.

I know of an instance where a guy shot a deer through and through and hit a second deer in the hind quarter about sixty yards behind it. luckly there was a second hunter who finished it off and tagged it , crazy happens but the hunter is the one who needs to own up and take the penalty.

whats funny is people trying to compare it to a deer or a elk..this is a very limited resource! and for this to happen is inexcuseable! not only did this guy rob someone this year of possibly drawing a tag due to his lack of awareness in 2012 this will now take a tag away next year!  :bash:

Can someone tell me why he is being investigated by WDFW for shooting two rams in Idaho unit 11? I know its close to the border but isn't it Idaho that should be investigating?

Last sentence. Says he's being prosecuted by Washington for exceeding his bag limits?
