Hate asking for help but here goes nothin
« on: October 26, 2014, 06:42:59 PM »
Well I don't usually ask for help believe in the whole " hunt till ya find em" method, but unfortunately this year the elk arnt cooperating, I have hunted the quilomene all my life for elk and usually have good success, this year my grand father drew a cow tag, hunted the quilomene today for spikes and didn't see a single elk, seen 1 set of fresh tracks,so my question is,anyone willing to point me in the right direction for what could be my grandfathers last hunt, the cow tag is 328,329, no experience in 328, we have permission for the wind farm but hoping someone else will give us info on a couple other spots

Just got home from there.  Seems all the animals are down in the canyons. Nothing being seen on top. Get grandpa in a nice exit saddle and go push for him. Saw a few leaving Brushy canyon in one of the few exit saddles yesterday.

I would head down towards the Cape, Horse & Stray Canyons. Also the old wheat field at the top of Stray & Horse. The Elk will be held up tight in the canyons or out in the open sage where they can see for a long ways around. I always get into a lot of elk down there.

check out the liberty area. There is a local herd that hangs right above town. Not many people hunt it. My buddy's wife shot her cow up there last year. It's worth a look.

Nope! You can say he breathed his last. My bro made a 396 yards shot with a 6.5 Grendel AR carbine and a 120gr Nosler ballistic tip. There was a first for him though. The elk had a arrow shaft through both nasel passages from side to side above the jaw and just in front and bellow the eyes. It was healed up and broke off on both sides.

There was one MONSTER bull with them. He beat feet the second the heard was spotted. Dropped off into the Tarpiscan.

I will be in 328 tomorrow if I find the cows I may try and connect with you if there are no spikes.  They havent been in the normal spots but the recent weather and hunter pressure I am hoping pushed em around a little.  I ran into a few during deer normally I run into A LOT so not sure what I will find but have a tag and some time so gonna go see whats out there.

Be patient. If you have permission to hunt the wind farm they will be pushed down low any day now. Its usually tue-wed we see them start showing up down in the sage. I hunted with my ol man in 328 this weekend and we were into elk every day also, just no decent shots at a spiker. I will be back over this weekend. I see you already have plenty of offers, but I would also be willing to show you a few spots that may hold cows if he hasn't tagged out. Id love to see him have success. Let me know. Good luck.

You can see the arrow shaft on this side but it's almost broke off flush protruding from the other side.

I am going to jump in here and tag along and see if I can pick up some helpful tips.  My son has that cow tag in 328 & 329.  I used to bow hunt up on top of the colockum pass for years back when it was spike and cow with a bow.  But I haven't hunted in there for years and never during rifle season.  I knew there are going to be a lot of hunters.  We are hoping to get off the road and put in some work and get away from most people and hope for the best to be able to find some cows for my son.  Due to stuff he has going on in school we aren't going to be able to get over there till Thursday afternoon.  But that gives us a few days.  So I just thought I might be able to pick up some updates and info from this thread and just go from there.

Thanks for all the replies!! Decided to go into the quilomene and just see what we could see, ended up getting into about 300 head but the fog came in and there was no decent shot opportunity, decided to back off and let the fog burn off while we checked some other spots, bumped another heard of about 100ish and ended up getting his cow! Out off all those elk not a single legal bull!!! Oh well,I appreicate all the PM's and responses! It was a good good day!
