Grouse and Deer Hunting Question
« on: November 14, 2014, 08:33:56 PM »
I posted this in the deer page as well. Looking for any guidance to the regs on this matter.

Is it legal to hunt deer in the morning. Then go grouse hunting with a dog in the afternoon and then back to deer hunting.

I ask this as I am fighting an internal struggle. I have a new bird dog and love hunting behind her. But she last about 5 hours 18 miles 7 for me before petering out. And I have an unfilled tag for deer and mornings and evenings have been best for me spotting them so far this season 70 does and one little button head buck.  Of coarse I would leave the dog kenneled in the truck while hunting deer.

If I can't hunt both then I will choose Grouse. I love exploring the woods and multiple blind flushes and the occasional miss. Some day I will connect. These wetside grouse are a challenge to get everything right. Dog points and holds and it flushes in a shootable direction while watching out for my two kids and new dog. Found lots of edible mushrooms at least while chasing them so far this year, so not going hungry at least. My son is the self proclaimed mushroom monster.  6 hunts 23 flushes and 4 shots, no hits. Best year for me so far. Having a dog in this pursuit is helping for sure. But I was a better shot before I got a dog, go figure.

yeah, I believe it's cool.
As long as the dog isn't with you while deer hunting.
or, as long as you don't have any kind of deer gun while hunting with her.... ie. 12 ga slugs

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

I used to bring my dog along during archery season. Leave her in the truck in the morning. Then chase mountain quail during the mid day. Then another elk hunt in the evening.  She loved it! I loved it! Never thought about it being illegal?

crap....   page 80 of the game regs.
I knew I saw this somewhere

"...10. Using dogs:
• Hunting wild animals (except rabbits
and hares) with dogs (hounds) during
the months of September, October,
or November in any area open to a
modern firearm deer or elk season is
prohibited.
• Allowing a dog, owned or controlled
by you, to pursue or injure deer or elk
or to accompany you while you are
hunting deer or elk is prohibited.
• Hunting or pursuing any big game
animal, bobcat, or coyote with dogs
is prohibited, except cougar hunting
as permitted by the Fish and Wildlife
Commission."

Birds might not classified as wild animals...
So, you're gonna have to say that you are rabbit hunting....
Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

ok... never mind.

"Wild Animals: Includes all mammals except feral
domestic mammals and old world rats and mice.
Wild Birds: All species of birds that exist in Washington in the wild state."
Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."
