Pops strikes again
« on: November 24, 2014, 02:38:32 PM »
Well, it was a banner year in our camp this season....We went 2 for 3 in our camp, one was my dad's opening day 6X6, and our good buddy Mike shot his first ever bull on the morning of day 7 with a nice 6X7.  I didn't tag out, but when these guys were able to do what they did, I didn't care much....

Dad's bull was unexpected...He and I were posted up at first light on one side of a drainage we had been watching.  We'd seen a nice 5 point in this area for going on 3 weeks, so we were confident he would be there again come opening morning.  Our plan was to walk our buddy Mike in across the drainage and post him up in hopes the bull would come through on his way to his bedding area in the timber.  Well, he did just that but efforts to get Mike on the radio went unanswered as he inadvertantly bumped the channel on his radio and couldn't hear us.

About 10 mins after our failed attempt to help Mike, a bull busts out of the canyon bottom just below us, and barrels through the buck brush.  Something had bumped him, and his track out was just below us.  As he worked his way up hill towards the timber, I confirmed to my dad he was a good bull and gave him the range to an opening that the bull was to step into as he cleared the trees.  Got on the glasses, and as he hit the opening my pops piled him up in his tracks with a high shoulder shot.

It can happen so quickly, and for being only an hour into opening day things just clicked for us and he got the job done.  Many a Crown Royal's went down in this camp, as my dad was beeming for the rest of the trip because of his best ever bull.  Not a massive trophy, but for us he is every bit of that.

Hope everyone else had a great time in the woods this year!  Counting the days until the next one for sure....

Gary

Many thanks everyone....These are general season bulls from Idaho.  My brother lives in Boise, and my dad is from Phoenix.  It's a great place to meet up and chase decent bulls over the counter for us.  We spent about 9 years in another area, which burned up in the summer of 2013, forcing us to move.  Mike is a Biologist with the FS, and has quite a bit of knowledge of this new area we have been in for 2 years.  Was an area he always wanted to hunt, but it's not the type of turrain he wanted to go solo into....So to be able to help him pack his first bull off that mountain was definitely a treat for all...

Just one of those years where plans came together....which, for anyone who hunts elk knows that isn't always the case....In fact, most times it's the opposite :)
