Muzzleload for deer, but extra carry for grouse?

Is it legal to carry your shotgun for grouse while you muzzy hunt for deer?  I'm goin on my first muzzy hunt with my father in law this coming weekend and I wanted to combine hunts.

Honestly I don't think you can IMO unless you are using shot in a muzzle pistol but I might be wrong. If it was me I would call fish n game.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't. But are you talking about just having a shotgun in your vehicle, or are you going to carry two guns while hunting?

Thanks for the quick responses. I didn't even think about a .22 handgun. I will just bring that. Thanks guys.

I wouldn't have both in my possession while in the field. Leave one in the truck and hunt one specie at a time. Legal or not,  it may well cause you grief if checked.

As for a handgun, "A modern handgun may be carried for personal protection." You may have a difficult time explaining how shooting grouse is necessary for personal protection.

Both make sense, but at the same time there are lots of animals in the woods and if its legal to shoot, why would they give you a hard time? Especially if my shotgun had light bird loads in it.

They may give you a hard time because they believe you are breaking the law. Right or wrong, you have to decide if it is worth that risk. I know officers that would cite a hunter for using a handgun to hunt while muzzleloader hunting for deer.

It is not illegal to hunt grouse with a handgun. It is illegal to carry a handgun while muzzleloader hunting for purposes other than personal protection, in the eyes of some officers.

The regs say a modern handgun may be carried for personal protection, but they can't be used to hunt big game or dispatch wounded big game animals during black powder season.  Doesn't say whether or not you can pop a grouse with your .22 while you are out hunting.

I would talk to your local game warden.  The law leaves a lot up to his/her interpretation, looks like to me.

I would feel much more comfortable with the .22 pistol than trying to explain the shotgun.  Plus, it weighs about 7# less.

Why don't you talk to your father in law. He might not want you to screw up the hunt shooting grouse. I know I wouldn't.

I had that very conversation on the pheasant opener.  My hunting Buddy did not see an issue during modern. I didn't want him to mess my deer hunt for a pheasant.   He tagged out early with a nice buck.  We went to different places, I ended up passing until late in the season.

I have hunted with a guy who is awesome except he can't help but shoot at grouse while he's deer hunting.  Don't get me wrong,  enjoy grouse as much as anyone but I'm not going to try to decapitate one with a .270 Winchester
