Great weather for Coyotes this weekend

With our NOAA forecast of highs of 13 deg for Sat and 21 deg for Sun and light winds of 6 mph calming to no wind and a 90% chance of snow of 3 to 7 inches Sat nite it's shaping up to some great coyote hunting. I'm figuring we'll have coyotes coming in by the dozens on every set. , Last week we were pulling them in from quite a distance snce there was no real wind. Just couldn't seem to get our act together. It can only get better since this has to be moving any remaining higher elevation coyotes down along with the deer etc. The ranchers should also have the cows moved into the winter feeding areas. So who's going out and doing some calling this weekend?

BullElk and I were thinking about taking our bows out sometime this season, Probably will but a little later. I'm thinking about the arrows being lost under the snow at 7 or 8 bucks apiece. Definitely will take some backup firepower.

I'm going out with bighorns2bushytails. We just got so much snow though (27 inches) that I'm worried about road conditions. I'm really excited about this season. Had a fantastic day tues although I only got one, but I think the calling will even be better. I wait all year for cold cold temps and snow then this happens. Well when the roads are squared away it's gonna be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could this weekend, but nothing until after Christmas.  Plus I only like to go out in 30 mph winds with negative temps with the wind chill.

ill be posted on top of a hay pile by a dairy dead animal pile tommorow morning by 5-5:30am and me and a buddy from selah are goin in the evening, but we dont know where yet. i dont think yakima is suppose to ge "alot" of snow, if any...

I made a few set ups this morning. It was -2. All three sets I had dogs on a rope and coming fast!!!!  SET 1-The first one I wasnt ever ready. He was at 150 before my first 30 sec sequence. Coudnt even get my gun up and he dumped over a hill to circle me. I waited and waited, nothing , so I rolled over and crawled up the hill to look behind me, nothing. What the heck!! Rolled back over to see him screaming away at about 30 yards from where I was sitting, never got a good shot.  SET 2- spotted him running at me at about 600 yards. He stopped on a dime when the win swirled, he was at 256. Wheeled around and burned back where he came from with a little lead helping him on his way Didnt hit hm but came real close, I think between his legs cause he hit the dirt when I shot, I thoguht he was toast. He got up and was gone, no blood.  SET 3- spotted the yote at about 300 and closing FAST and he too dumped over a dune to circle me. Never popped back out, and I was patient this time.

Oh well, it was  a fun filled morning for a few frigid hours.

How do you keep them from circling you. I did not have a decoy or anything moving, would that help?

I always use decoys and I do believe they help. Coyotes really try to come from downwind, 99 times of 100. I never used to pay as much attention as I should have now it's my main consideration. They'll go a long ways downwind at times and they will smell you. You can tell when they do to. No thinking about it at all, they just turn and run.

Yep, they're just going downwind to get any scent. I went out today with my coyote hunting group and I called 2 in on one set. The problem was they didn't circle downwind but came in directly with the Northern wind. They busted out of the sagebrush at 50 yrds and headed straight for me on a dead run. I had to bring the gun around and by the time I got the first coyote in the crosshairs they were at about 25 yrds and still running. I woofed but they didn't stop so I pulled the trigger at 15yrds but I still had the safety on, I usually take a AR with me and forgot I had the Ruger .243 with the 3 position safety. Wished I had taken a shotgun instead.  Anyway they split in opposite directions and headed out with the afterburners on. It was -3 with about a 12 mph wind. A decoy will help but it's just one more thing to pack along. I think I'll take one next time.

when its cold like this,my experience has been they run at you,to be there first,I can hear them bitting and fighting to get to ya..The wet side where I hunt cant even get in there to much snow,Very tight hunting all close shots..
