I shot a dink bull at about that far this September... he was moving much faster though.  Scariest thing of my hunting career.  More so than a bluff charge by a black bear.

Cool video. One yard shot and no pass through! Tough critters for sure!

I may be wrong but at 1 yd i dont think your arrow is traveling with all its kinetic energy yet.

:yeah:  I put two arrows into elk this year and neither passed through.  This makes me feel a lot better.

Physics is not my strong suit. Can you please explain this concept a little more?

Has all it's kinetic energy, just not all mass is lined up with the axis of the arrow.  Penetration is generally better at 25 yards than it is at 2 or 3 yards.

Looks to me as though the arrow hit the opposite shoulder.  Arrow is moving a good bit as he runs off.  More than just being the muscles on the entrance side.  Dang fine shot for being so close and on the move

The arrow starts LOSING kinetic energy the microsecond it leaves the string. It is at its absolute fastest at that exact instant when it leaves the string and starts to slow down immediately.

So it doesn't in fact have all its kinetic energy - it's losing it steadily.

technically correct but he's right in a practical sense because the arrow isn't stabilized yet and doesn't have the penetration capability of what it has at 20 yards.  Like what RAD was saying.

Duke Savora used to use the term "Sectional Density" in regards to this phenomenon.  Basically making a point that, like a bullet, as the diameter of a bullet increases the weight behind it must increase accordingly to achieve the same penetration.  Simplified it is the distribution of mass around the axis that focuses energy for penetration.  If a quarter inch diameter arrow is in a state of yaw or flex the true orientation of the arrows mass could be an inch in diameter.  Even more if distance is extremely close to the bow or the spine is light for weight.  As the arrow stabilizes the yaw and/or flex is reduced improving the Sectional Density and ultimately penetration within the boundary of what energy has not been spent.  Was always an interesting discussion when Duke explained his understanding of the art and science!
