Winter steel, no question.  Summer steel is good too.  But the added element of cold/rain/snow, and being less active eaters/biters in winter puts it over the top.  Even better, add in the challenge of landing one from the bank, and you're on pins and needles the whole time.  Lost ten in a row from the bank one winter...was absolutely killing me, but I've never fished harder or been more focused to get off the schnide!

I also like chinook in the salt, but just don't feel the challenge is nearly as great.

Smallmouth on the John Day River-5o+ day's,Winter Stealhead- anywhere, for all the reasons stated above. But the most exciting fish of all was a 8' sturgeon I caught jigging for Walleye below the John Day dam. With my medium action Fenwick, with 12lb. test line. Took me about 45 min. and chased him for 2 miles down river with my boat. Now that was fun!!!!!

Coho's with out a doubt, but isn't quite the same here, sorry...  So it is on to Sturgeon that are fast becoming my fun fish... of course some springer's and going to give it some go for Steelhead... By the way---  as Huntnphool stated---- Rednecks are always OK on my boat... I'll echo that for my boat too....

what IYO makes kings the best? for me I have caught id say around 700-1000 myself and boated at least that many in my years in AK and cananda and wa.. my personal best is 51lbs..... they are a great fish, exciting for sure.. but more exciting then a 10ft sturgeon tailwalking behind the boat? not to me...

you guys can keep all yer kings and coho's...while i love catching them...the ultimate for me is wild westslope cutthroats on a 7' 3wt. fly rod on dry flies...there's a certain reward to it.
also a big fan of flyrod steelhead, but that can be the biggest challenge on the water so i usually just get frustrated and give up.

Drift fishing bait for Steelhead is the most exciting...no bobber/strike indicator/training wheels. I like to actually have to feel the bite. I hooked quite a few this summer on bobber/jig, but it definitely isn't as fun as drift fishing.

personally I like to catch fish and I do whatever it takes to do that, id say about 90% of the time bobber/jig will outfish bait and is hands down a better way to fish, if the fish are suspending you can get them, if they are holding near the bottom you can get them, if they are tucked under a ledge you got them, with bait you dont have the same odds, and I think its more fun and it takes just as much skill IMO, and if you REALLY want to feel the bite toss a spinner or spoon

I like fishing Winter Steelhead.  I usually fish eggs while my girlfriend runs a bobber and jig.

I carry 3 rods when i go, that way any part of the water I can fish... a spinner rod, drft rod and bobber rod, the water dictates what presentation to use... jig fishing is the most efficient to hook fish for numerous reasons, one of them is time in the water, I dont care how good of a drift fishermen you are we all snag numerous times throughout the day and that takes time from our bait in the water, with a jig you should never snag and thus you are keeping your presentation in the water longer, equalling more fish...... I also like to toss hardware after drifting or bobber fishing, sometimes there is a aggressive fish that really wants to kill something and those id say are the most fun, because the hit is awesome!
