head shots with a bow
« on: December 10, 2014, 09:56:45 PM »
Just saw a trail cam video of a blacktail buck with an arrow sticking out of its head. I read posts from guys stating that elk and deer are taken this way all the time. This seems a bit on the irresponsible side of thinking.

I'm not sure where you have read posts that they are "taken this way all the time" other than on anti-hunting sites.  Responsible hunters know this; you very well should know this; and bringing it up in a public forum is only an attempt to incite a reaction.  I suggest thinking before typing in cases like this.

No bowhunter worthy of the name shoots game in the head in anything but the most desperately weird circumstances. I suppose I'd do it if a bear were climbing into my tree when I was in a stand and I had no other shot etc etc etc.

But no, head shots are just not something done with bows and arrows. Ever.

All the time, NO. Accidentally, Yes. Irresponsible, Yes.

That is such a low percentage shot, even with a rifle I find that irresponsible.

Step away from the YouTube. You're posts lately make me wonder whether or not you are in favor of hunting at all. What is the point you are trying to make with this thread? 1st you attempt to put a black eye on hunters that use bait, now it seems as though you're attempting to start drama with the bowhunting community. I'd challenge you to find a single archery hunter in this online hunting community of several thousand members who takes head shots with archery tackle "all the time". I'd almost think you'd find very few if any that say they'd take that shot at all.
Rather than throw stones at your fellow hunters, try standing together with them.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I've done it twice to finish off elk previously shot in an undesirable way.  No other shot opportunity in thick brush and I felt the most humane thing to do was to attempt the shot.  Both shots gave the desired almost instant result, but dang it has to be darn near prefect or the arrow glances off.  Never a good choice on a big game animal as an intentional shot under normal hunting conditions.  Chances of the perfect shot reaching the right area of the brain is extremely low.  Low percentage shot with a rifle or muzzy too!  Exercising patience will usually result in a better opportunity for all user groups.

Thankfully in 35 years of hunting I have only seen a few animals shot in the head with an arrow.  Usually the result of a range estimation error.  Accidents do happen, as with anything in life.  The statement that elk and deer are taken this way all the time is misleading.  I'm sure there are elk and deer killed this way every year by errant shots.  But I highly doubt that the percentage of bowhunters that attempt this shot even reaches 1%.

The one thing this does illustrate is how well deer recover from broadhead mishaps.

I would venture to say that most deer that do not take a vital hit with a broadhead heal up quickly and live a normal life. Much like someone getting a sugical cut on the leg or head.

Just take a look at MMA fighters, they take hits and cuts and heal up just fine.

Thanks for sharing the fact that the buck was seen on video after living through an attempt on his life. I am guessing he is enjoying his extra bling and appears to be showing it off in front of the cameras for all to see.

That buck may just start a new fad for other bucks and we may see bucks running into arrows head on :IBCOOL:

It is always nice to see more evidence that proves most un-recovered bow shot deer actually live to see another day and go on as if nothing ever happened. Thanks for sharing.  :hello:

I would guess that most arrows in the head are missed shots. I know a lot of archers and I don't think a single one would purposely take that shot. You should join the administration. They work on a lot of problems which don't exist.
