We were expecting not so good weather yesterday for our Quail hunting.  Turned out to be one of the best days of the year with over a dozen coveys encountered.

Nice double on the Huns!

A happy dog is one with a mouth full of feathers sitting at your feet.

Used to be a time where I was the dog flushing chuckars out of the draws for my dad and uncles. Me in the bottom with my single shot 16 guage, them up on the side with their pumps and semi autos. They never figured out how easy my shots were on going away birds while they were always blasting away at birds going to the side. I would go through 7-10 shots with as many birds and they emptied full boxes getting only one or two each. Ahhh, the old days. Now my knees can't take that bottonm of the breaks scrambling.
There is no greater respect to have for wildlife than to harvest an animal fairly and use it's flesh to feed your family.  ~me

Great videos.

We were in the Wenas yesterday and had quite a squall move through, weird weather day for sure. We toughed it out though...didn't encounter a single bird :)

was actually easier to use the cam than I expected it to be. Gopro has app for cell phone that allows the phone to wifi connect. I had the cam in standby with my cell phone in pocket, when I wanted to take a pic (first dog to point) I just pulled out phone and hit start so I didn't have to take hat off and worry about changing the view. I really didn't have to slow the dogs... thru the course of 6 hours required 2 batteries for gopro. phone pic attached to show on my hat on one of our breaks.

so I found one more clip from the weekend adventure that I will post up. this one to me, is very instructional. why it is very important hunting over dogs to be mindful of where they are at all times. This hun swung back over my dog and the dog masked any possible downhill shot. my puppy moved parallel and remained in the line of fire until well out of range.. note she never locked up either, she was scent trailing a running bird as the wind was directly down hill crossing....

ran into guy a few years ago that hit his dog with a few pellets. he said dog kept hunting and he found out when he got home .dog was in recovery and ok. quail are notorious for staying low.

Low flyers are a big reason a dog that is steady to wing and shot is a nice thing to have, another reason is that if there are birds spread out and they don't all go at once, you can flush multiple birds.A dog that goes with the flush can run through a pile of birds that otherwise would have stuck to the ground. There is also the saftey factor that a dog will chase birds right over the edge of a drop off and can get hurt.My buddys 8 month old shorthair pup did exactly that in Montana, chased a pheasant right off the edge of the river bank and fell straight down about 20 feet to the gravel bar.He didn't get hurt but he yelped and was a little leery of drop offs after that,he paid closer attention to where he was running.

not much beats watching your dog hold through the shot til he's released and commanded to flush!
