Blackmouth tips or suggestions
« on: January 12, 2015, 08:52:00 PM »
Hi everyone, I am looking to get out for Blackmouth after duck season wraps up. Not really sure where to start. I'd like to fish somewhere around everett. It will be my first time out in my boat in the salt. Anybody have any suggestions on how to fish for these guys and areas which may produce some fish.

Thanks in advance.

If you are launching from the 10th st boat ramp. Dont turn right until you are past the yellow can. Water is very shallow at low tide. Google the Racetrack or Possession  for tips on where to fish. Salmonuniversity.com will help as well.

Fish the areas that I've marked in red.  100 to 150 feet - stay near the bottom.  Fish the tide changes, 2 hours before to half hour after.  Look for bait, birds, troll with current.  Stay warm, watch the weather, it can get nasty fast.

CP highlighted plenty of good spots that produce fish. I'd add another. Because the weather can get nasty I don't think I would suggest beginning on The Bar. If weather permits I like to run past there and fish Skunk Bay and south of Point no Point. Skunk Bay has always produced between 90 and 150. Its a nice sandy bottom and very forgiving if you touch bottom. Being sheltered from the weather is nice also. I troll along the bay and keep my gear in the water when going past the point. Often moochers will be working the point so give them some room the hook back in towards shore when south of the point. I like to run a spoon on one side and a hoochie with a corkie type spinner in front for more flash. I do believe UV lures will help. Since it is important to stay low to the bottom check those hooks. All my flashers for blackmouth are pretty scuffed up. I like to try and keep them bumping the bottom on their downward roll and that can dull your hooks.

Bottom line, pun intended, like CP said, be safe. Weather can kick up especially on the bar this time of year.

Not an expert, rarely get a chance to fish anymore...
But when I did, a cut-plug herring behind a simple banana weight (4-8 oz.)
Drop it to the bottom, pick it up a couple cranks and slow troll...
I always caught a few dogfish, but several times I was the only guy in the boat that caught a salmon, despite all the fancy gear the guy taking me out recommended.

You guys are awesome. Main goal is to get out, have some fun, share the experience with my girlfriend and maybe get lucky enough to catch a few fish. I really appreciate the maps. That's one thing I need to take a look at on my lowrance to see if I can locate those areas. I still need to get some gear but want to get out in the salt and try my hand at catching some salmon this year. I appreciate the tips, keep them coming if there is anything else you'd like to share. Otherwise, hope to see you all on the water. Tight lines.
