Has anyone had any experience with one? I'm thinking about getting one for my wife. And to use as a family car. Looking at an 05 model. Just looking to see if there are any issues to look out for and if they are reliable? Or any other recommendations on a good midsize suv? Thanks!

They burn gas like a fiend and cost my buddy at least 1k a year in repairs on some sensor, belt, or other thing from when he bought new until he sold it 8 years later.... YMMV.

They such on gas mileage.  Make sure to change the timing belt on time and I had my head gasket blow.  It is a pain to replace.  Other than that I love it and am going to drive it until it rust apart.

I did the timing belt at 125,000 and had a cracked manifold at about 80,000 other than that mines been awesome. The gas milage ain't great but it's the best rig I've ever had for snow and in the hills

I know a teacher who lives in a remote area who depends on her 03 xterra to get to school 5 days a week, she loves it and has had no problems.

I drove some a long time ago and the regular motor felt a little gutless but other than gas mileage I have heard and read mainly good things

I have enough friends that have them and love them that I thought I would trade the Explorer in on one.  Went to test drive it and my head was tight against the ceiling...zero head room!  Figured if I ever hit a good bump I'd end up with a concussion    Then I started to realize all my friends that have them are all 5' 10" or shorter. 

Thought of getting the FJ, but just can not get used to the thought of driving a $30,000 4X4 AMC Pacer   Dang those things are ugly!

I've had an "04" bought it new. Been a great rig, always did the regular maintenance. including the 116k timing belt. Gas milage is not great and doesn't tow for sh*t, but awesome in the snow and creeps rocks and washed out roads like a champ. Will be keeping mine around tell the wheels fall off.

If you look good enough you can find Land Rover for same price range maybe year older. It's a off road on road king, comforble and roomy.

I bought a 06 in 08 that had 27k miles on it. It now has 242k miles on it and still runs like new.  I have had a few factory recall issues resolved, but other than that great rig. I'll probably buy another in the future. Put 6 sets of tires on it, had the brakes done 4 times, replaced the battery twice.

I had a 2001. bought it with 11000 miles and sold with 97000 when i bought a truck. Was a good rig,
good off-road and daily driver. just not as tricked out as some others. As for gas, as compared to a chevy 2500 with a 6.0 liter, it was a dream.

When I was looking at them a few years ago, the 80k mile mark seemed to be when most people said issues started happening. Went and looked 4Runners instead and haven't been happier!
