Driving my Jeep to Moab. Anyone been down there lately?

Planning to go down there for my first trip sometime in April or May timeframe. Just curious to hear if anyone else has been down there doing some trails and what their general impression is. Weather, things to do, tips, tricks, etc?

I have a buddy that goes down right at the end of the jeep safari and loves it. He takes his built Tracker. It's coming up pretty soon.

There is a little of everything from mild to wild. Some really pretty road trips through the area. I'd go if I had time.

I've been going down to the Moab area for over 20 years hunting.  Never done any of the off road 4 wheeling other than what we needed to do to get where we wanted to hunt. I have several friends who have, though, and I know they advise to be cautious when you do it.  Several places there where you can get maps and advice and lots of upscale motels and restaurants.  (Place has turned very yuppie over the years)I do know you can find routes that go from fairly easy and scenic to routes that are borderline dangerous.  Lots of money made by the locals rescuing off roaders who got in over their heads and a couple of junk yards full of destroyed 4 wheel drives.  Great campgrounds up the river towards Castle Valley if you are going to be camping and I personally know of a spot up that way where there are dinosaur tracks just off the road which are cool to see. Great place to visit and you'll come back wanting to go again.  Take a good camera.

From what I have heard, you will want AC In your rig. I have never been but all the guys on my sas s10 forum say that it is HOT

You won't have to worry about heat in April or May.  Often still snow in the mtns. around town that time of year.  Keep in mind Moab sits at over 4,000 ft. altitude (higher than Snoqualmie pass) and if you head up into the Lasalles east of town you'll be up over 6,000 ft. very quickly.  You may find yourself suffering a little from altitude sickness if you really start prowling around much and often times older rigs suffer a bit from the higher altitude oxygen mix. Where we hunt we actually camp at over 8,000 ft, kills me for a day or two until I adjust. Parts replacement in town aren't cheap, might pay to take along a few extra on some parts you think may need replacing while there.

I've been to Moab several times to go offroading and have done a number of trails down there, mostly in my 1973 fj40 land cruiser.  Here's a video coming down "Cliff Hanger" last year.

Fins and Things is a nice, mild trail with scenic views, not technically challenging if you have a relatively stock jeep.  We ran it at night in 2013, which is a little creepy as you're driving up on big rock spines with steep drops on either side.

No more cracks for this cowboy. Hung up my chocks and climbing chalk years ago. My rock gear now decorates my kitchen window.
If I can't put wheels on it, I'll leave it to the younger guys.

Yea, I contemplated the EJS but that just seems like too much "social" for my liking. Hotels are jammed and the idea of doing a slow crawl in a long tango line just doesn't appeal to me. It would be a good way to learn a lot in a crash course but I prefer a slower pace and a little more solitude. I'm sure there will be enough people around once the weather starts to warm a bit.
