AK black bear round
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:38:59 AM »
I'm going to AK black bear this spring ( kinda a last minute thing). I have the 300win mag savage , bear hunter model. Shoot .180 Barnes
I want to use that rifle, any input on going up from .180 or you think that would be enough?

For black bear a 180 is plenty.

180 grain is more than enough, especially  since you're talking about a Barnes 180. That would be plenty good for a grizzly bear as well.

 :yeah:

180 is ideal in the .300 Win Mag.

AK twist is something like 9.5-1 so that should work. I would worry about velocity. The 180 is pretty long for a short case and OAL is controlled by mag length. I would use a lighter bullet.

Also, not all 7.62 is the same. I think the eastern block stuff was .311?

J, I think he meant in his 300 win IN Alaska, not IN an AK rifle

No need to go any bigger than 180 and it shoots so flat there is no need for a 165.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

More then enought

I used my .270 with 140 gr on my AK POW black bear hunt in 2012.

Shot placement is key in my opion.

I have harvested 25 black bears, with calibers ranging from 22-250 up to the 338-378 weatherby. Yes more then capable!
