Sherman Unit GMU 101
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:38:20 PM »
Looking for any info on this Unit, I scored access to 40+ Acres of private land that butts right up against the Coville Nat Forest.  Anyone know anyone that has had any luck or know if there are any good bulls up there.  I have multi-season tag this year, I usually hunt Wetside, but figure I would give it a shot if its worth it... Not looking for Honey holes or anything just curious as to what the elk are like up there if there are any....

Elk are sparse in 101, without local herd knowledge idea stick to what you know.

Well that's not good... I was just hoping there were elk in there I mean 40 acres isn't a lot but I mean it's worth a shot maybe during the rut... Might even have someone come with that knows the area to get a chance at one...

I never saw any elk there besides once and it happened to be on the Native land so they shot it. Up by the border a few years ago a herd of elk came across but blunder right into a group of hunters and a spike was taken and the herd ran back to canada. I have found sign up in the national forest but I've seen more rams and wolves then I have elk or even elk sign. I've never hunted the east side of boulder though so maybe they're hiding out over by the river.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

look on WDFW harvest reports for the 101 unit. That should tell you all you need to know about herd size.  182 hunters in 2013 and only 16 elk.

I wouldn't waste your time looking for elk in the GMU.

You hear of Border patrol running across them once in a great blue moon. I wouldn't put a lot of time in to it if I were you, save that 40 acres for deer and you might be on to something.

There's small pods here and there. The places I know where they're at are on private property and there is no way you'll get permission to hunt them, locals first.

I have spent a lot of time in that unit over the years, mostly on public tho, but have never seen an elk.  40 acres isn't a lot of dirt to work with, even in elk-rich areas, imho.  You pulled a sweet tag, but I wouldn't spend it sitting on your pard's patch hoping for an elk to swing though.
Hunt them where they is, not where they ain't.

There are several herds in 101, but you need to know exactly where they are and unless your landowner has seen elk on their property I wouldn't expect to see elk there. But if they see elk there or there is fresh sign in the early fall it might be just the place to kill a good bull.

Getting fewer all the time.  8 wolf killed deer were found this winter on a short survey hike of Brown and Quartz Mts.

There are wolves in some of the elk areas now too. I haven't spent enough time looking at the elk over the last couple years to know if they are impacting the elk herds? I do think the wolves have been impacting the moose as I have seen fewer moose since the wolves showed up in those areas, so it's possible they are impacting the elk too.

IME Wolf packs move into a drainage, things get quiet.  However, the elk will still be screaming just a ridge away!  :)  Have witnessed this many times.

I've never seen, heard or smelled an elk around here. I know families that have lived in the 101 all their lives and have never seen an elk. These guys are ranchers, who ride and gather their cattle in the worst ares too....nada. This is the Curlew, Boulder Pass, Kettle Crest Trail areas I'm talking about. I know one rancher who saw a Lynx years ago....on Boulder.

And the fact that last years harvest report was mostly about archery in 101.
I suspect there are a few honey holes where one or two elk a year are killed.
Not that many elk are fording the Kettle river to go west.
Maybe some are coming down from Canada.
