Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Value
« on: April 15, 2015, 10:32:45 AM »
Hey Folks put yourself in my shoes.

Co-worker's wife wants the rifles out of the house.  One is a pre-64 Model 70 SN-505272 that he'd like to sell me.  He asked me to give him $600 and I have right of first refusal.  He's never fired it, neither have I.

What would you do?

Says 30-06

Is that rust on barrel or dust?

Stock looks carved up

The mod 70's get over $1200 if in decent shape with original stock, butt plate etc

This does not look in that great of shape. I would examine bore, shoot it  and if in good shape not a bad deal for $600 but would not say great deal

What do you mean when you say that the stock looks "carved up"?  Yes there is scroll work/carving on the stock but that's on purpose.  This rifle seems to have been babied.  He said I can take it for a few days and put a couple rounds through it.

:yeah:  I'd give him the money up front asap so he can't change his mind or tells a friend that knows about these guns that he's selling it.

Don't worry about the custom woodwork at all if you're buying as a rifle to keep and use, and you like the carving and engraving, snatch it up.  If you're buying for an investment, you'll probably need to replace the stock and floorplate to see your best return.

You're looking for "Super Grade" engraved on the floorplate as a first clue.  It's not there, or was replaced with a non-Super Grade floorplate when they did the scroll work.  Also should have a gold bead front sight.  It would also have really nice wood, but that wouldn't be worth much now as it is carved.  As long as they didn't do any scroll work on the receiver itself, you can't go wrong value-wise on this gun.  Floorplates and stocks can be replaced.  I'd buy it right now if I had the opportunity, and I need another 30-06 Winchester 70 like I need a face-to-face audit with the IRS.

Do a google search on Win pre 64 mod. 70 super grade and look at the photos. Scroll down and there are a couple of photos with the same scroll engraving. It could be a rare one and paying a good appraiser could be helpful.

To be honest I'm in the market for a 20ga side by side.  This just fell in my lap.  And the last thing I need is another rifle... lol  Already have a .303, .308 AR, Model 700 .30-06, Model 70 .300 Win Mag.

Did it come with the leupold?  I think with the scope its a pretty good deal.  Seems like while these are sought after, condition has the biggest impact on price.  I would say at $600 you got a good deal, especially if it came with a scope.  I wouldn't cal it a SHOCKINGLY AMAZING deal, but definitely a good deal.
