Getting skunked and getting puzzled as to why. Fun to see your catches.Five overnight soaks this summer in carefully selected places based on reading here. Have caught zero crawdads, four pike minnows and two sculpin/bullheads. Two nights in an eddy of a large river 8 feet upstream from a broken rock rubble underwater causeway that is loaded with crawdads. One full day in a large clear lake placed in rock rubble continuation of a talus slope. Two nights on different rock rubble riprap in a large river, slow current. I've chosen places with most rocks in the fist to melon size, with a few big boulders mixed in. I am not using a boat.I use fresh frozen salmon heads, parts and bellies that I caught, cleaned and froze myself. Bullard trap. I set the trap in line with current, one opening upstream and one down. Depths from two feet to eight feet. Will try setting in a creek next. Lots of dads in the big river near me, similar to lower Columbia, but I have yet to catch one. Looking for any tips or help that has not been posted, that you are willing to share. I will admit that in certain hunting/fishing topics there are difference-making bits of info that I don't share, so no problem if you keep your cards close. Alms for the poor?
If your getting fish (how big?) in your trap, maybe the crawdads are getting out? What kind of trap are you using? I've never caught any fish in my traps. I also use zip ties in my openings, that way they can't get out. I think I posted a picture in one of the other crawdad threads. I'll see if I can find it or I'll try to post a picture tonight when I get home.

The trap is made by Terry Bullard specifically for crawdads, and the mesh size wouldn't let a keeper crawdad out. I discovered Terry's traps on this site. I use the metal mesh bait box Terry recommends and hang it in the center of the trap so critters have to go inside to get to the bait, and then can't carry it away nor wolf it all down but have to pick at it through the wire mesh openings which are about 1/2 or maybe 3/8 inch across.Appreciate the info from everyone. I'd try more often but am cautious about having someone steal my trap, so only set it when time allows me to set it at or after dark and pick it up before sunup. May go check out a small creek outlet from a lake this evening.
