Pumice Plain Elk area 5063
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:19:13 AM »
Drew this elk tag for cow only.  Generally familiar with the area, but thought I would ask for pointers anyways.  Its an October hunt if that matters.  Thanks!!!

My buddy drew that tag as well.  I'll be along for the journey.

You will bag a bull in September so don't worry about the cow.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Congrats on the draw!

I drew that permit in 2011.  Congrats, it's a great hunt.  Elk were still bugling in Oct.

No problem, I’ll send you something next week when I have some time.  It’s no secret and there won’t be many other hunters there with you.

CP, I shot my Toutle bull just down and to the right from that photo.

Crunchy, the area of that photo is some of the limited area that actually has good cover in the Unit.  Its been 11 years, but that area held elk when we were there.  Another hunter who drew that tag that I helped told me after his hunt that as soon as the elk were spooked, they headed to the wide-open areas and ran a long ways.

Its a second elk tag (cow) so I am hoping to fill the freezer and then some.  Last time I got to elk in the same year I had a bunch of pepperoni and jerky made with the second elk.  It was delicious and everyone loved it.

For the week of my hunt there are four other people that drew the same tag.  So I hope to get some good ideas on where to start, and bring a buddy or two to pack out a big fat cow in one trip.

Crunchy, I drew the hunt before yours. Only one other guy in there with me. I have some ideas for access, no doubt the same ones you have...

We have Toutle archery tags this year and heard from another hunter who was walking the boundary in that area and he mentioned that he watched someone pack out a big 7x7 out of the PP.  He confronted him once he got on the trail and said he shot it in the Toutle.  Obviously this guy was full of BS based on the location where he was originally spotted and the story he gave.  The guy I talked to took a picture but I am not sure if he reported it or not.  Its unfortunate that there are people who get away with stuff like this.
