Vail Youth Hunt
« on: June 17, 2015, 07:31:25 AM »
My son got the vail youth hunt this year.  Unfortunately I have not hunted vail in a few years.   I'm assuming this should be a pretty good hunt since he can go in the weekend before without the pass.   Does anyone know if you can start scouting now without the pass?  I believe the main gate is open Saturday and Sunday.  What areas should we look.  I hate asking this many questions I would like to put my son in a deer and help home get his first one.  Thanks for any and all information.

I believe it's open for access now but you'll have to walk in.

There is no access to Vail with out the permit, the website is wyrecreationnw.com  They typically let the youth hunters go in there for the first weekend only and that's it. You are going to have 2 days to hunt. I have hunted vail every year except 2 years ago and you don't see many does the first few weeks so cover lots of ground and good luck. My son took his first deer there last year and I took a nice buck but that was with the permit and many days of hunting.

It is open for walk in access only right now. After July 31st it is permit access only except for the youth hunt for the weekend. I don't think you will have any problem getting him on deer. I was up there at least once a week from August until the end of October. I saw at least 15-20 deer a day. Make sure to take the time to stop and glass a lot.

Is it the antlerless or any deer tag?

Bucks can be harder to come by that early in October but a doe will be easy if he is limited to the two day access.

Yeah a doe tags a gimme. My son drew the buck tag.  I put him in for the wrong one by mistake.  He'll get a full week before the modern season opens to hunt.  I have the pass.  So we will kill a buck just might not be as easy as the doe.

If you get the right weather that early weekend and crowd free weekdays prior to the opener will show ya some bucks.  My kid has drawn the buck permit twice with good bucks each time.

Thanks mike .  We'll find one for him.  Lots of deer last year just couldn't find him a buck to stand still for a shot.

Do you have a GPS unit you can use if so will pm you a spot to check out always see deer on this hillside. Won't find any big bucks there but always see smaller ones.
