Siouxon cow tag
« on: June 19, 2015, 11:41:12 PM »
First off, I did a search and couldn't find anything relatively new regarding the Siouxon unit. My dad drew a modern cow tag and I want to get a camera or two set up to help him out. I'm somewhat familiar with it, mostly on the Carson side though and particularly Trout Creek flats up the 42. He won't be hunting the steep canyons so I want to stick to the more manageable ground for a 71 YO. If anyone has some suggestions I'd be more than happy to hear them. Going to head up tomorrow and do some early scouting while he's fishing in BC  :)

Thanks
Chris

Check out the Iron Mountain area, between Cougar and Chelatchie Prarie, lots of big new clearcuts and you can drive a lot of the roads.Probably lots of hunters but you should be able to get a cow up there. We hunted up there for years when the roads were closed and did good but havent been there during season since 06.
If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.

Thanks, would that be hitting the old IP road just out of Cougar? I've been meaning to explore that area but hadn't got around to it. Or am I off?  :)

We always hunted the top end of panther creek, four corners, red butte and the Wart area up toward Falls creek.
Pretty sure that's one of those tags you put in for if you already have your regular elk camp there and are looking to add opportunity. Not really a "destination" type tag.

Chris, I used to hunt up around Bare Mt. Im not sure what it looks like now, its been 7 years since I've been over there. I was thinking of checking it out for Bow season. Maybe a scouting trip is in order???

I'm hoping there will be few hunters in those areas. I know there are a lot of elk and they were easy to find in the clearcuts but now the cuts are reprod and they haven't logged in there in years. The big timber is where to find the elk now. I also want to check out Trapper creek wilderness. Lots of old growth timber in there

Yeah the IP road along the lake and straight up the mountain, there are usually elk in there, and on the other side toward Chelatchie, check out DNR 1000,3000,5000 roads.Should be able to cut a cow tag in that area,Im pretty sure the IP is gated at both ends but you can still drive around up top and find herds.

There Is still the herd that circles around the IP road, unfortunately the cut that's there is very well grown to optimal hiding height and brushyness. It still is possible to see them on the way down from the top in the last cut to the left before the new tank traps but unfortunately everyone and there mom is gonna believe they have a chance at a bull during rifle season and will be stacked up on you. If the tag holder is able to make it from the end of the road down to the IP I'd suggest to scout an early morning there anytime before September. They are there every morning and you can always sneak down and say hi. The new tank traps they put in are loose gravel and given the age with a little help he should have no problem. Also possible that the people wheelin through there made a packed down trail by now. better yet take a boat from the othe side of yale and walk into it from the shore.

Also the road from there to Chelatchie/canyon creekside side of the hill they made a few new cuts that have been looking more promising. We have been seeing elk in them the last few times. Good luck and sorry I don't remember and road names lol
