Montana Antelope 480 481 491
« on: January 07, 2009, 06:34:24 PM »
I was looking at the draw results of these three units and saw they were in the 80% to 90% catagory.  Anyone out there ever hunt these units?  Is there any public land?  I don't know anyone that lives in these areas.  There's gotta be a reason they are so easy to draw.  No one putting in for them 'cause they can't get permission?
Not looking for your honey hole, just some information to get started researching.

Very familiar with 491.  Lots of private but  most of the time its pretty easy to obtain permission to hunt.  Just go over before the season and scout.  Most of the time goat is fine but deer and elk will be a no!  The Hooterites own a lot of land there and will let you hunt but I suggest you dont on the first weekend, unless you want to get shot or see dead goats all over that no one will claim.  You will be dumbfounded at the amount of critters you will see there.  Elk, speedgoats, mule deer, whitetail and black bear.  If you draw 491 book a room at the Tenderfoot Motel.  Liz and Dean are great people.  406-547-3303 White Sulpher Spring MT.  The Truck stop cafe has great food.

THanx BC Chaser.  I have been told before to avoid the opening weekend circus for antelope.  This gives me a great place to start.

I hunt 481. There are a ton of Antelope out there. I hunt private land but 481 is a big unit and there is some public in there. Just get a good map. And knock on doors.

What kind of map do you suggest?  BLM?  Do they show land ownership?  I have never planned an out of state hunt before.

One of the DeLorme gazetteers will do you quite well.  The new ones show public land.  Or visit the local ranger station there.

When I was hunting this year we were out on a dirt road just south of the missouri river and all of the sudden there was a post with a Fish and game sign with a box full of maps Showing BLM, state land and other stuff.

Contact the BLM office in Missoula, they have individual unit maps that show state, blm and private lands. You can also purchase a disc that has every unit in the state on it.

Thanx Huntinphool.  We are still debating whether to do MT or WY (I am leaning towards WY, my sister wants to do MT).  If we get drawn I will start obtaining maps.  None of the three of us have ever killed a goat, so we're not going to be picky this year if we get drawn.  Anything over 12" is good enough for me.  I do some hobby taxidermy, so it will be fun to do something other than deer.

Yes, WA does.  It's called Washington State Explorer: BLM Map Edition

If you get drawn get a list of block management units in your area. Most of them require reservations to hunt them, first come first serve. I live in North Central Montana if you have any questions for me I would be glad to help.

THanks Bow-n-head.  That is just exactly the sort of thing I was wondering.  Knowing that I will probably put in next week.  I will let you know if I draw.
