Cody Rich with RichOutdoors wanted me to discuss what I felt the ten biggest mistakes archery elk hunters make. Below is the link to the podcast. I'm curious to see what you agree with.

Thanks Guys. The only thing that is for sure in elk hunting is that nothing is for sure  ;)

Are there any other topics you would like us to discuss?

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Sorry its taken so long to reply JP... I became addicted to 1 hr. Long podcasts.

There is so much content here at our disposal. Phelps absolutely hits this one out of the ballpark! There was a couple things that I've been fortunate enough to hear Jason say in person that weren't included here. But to my suprise, I was pleased to see Phelps did another podcast back in April! There is actually two hours of Phelps elk talk here! In episode 04 Jason gives instruction on calling, overall tactics, setup, and elk behavior. Corey Jacobson, Remi Warren, Jason Phelps and Trevor Marquis cover elk hunting in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona.

For us Rosie Guys, Phelps and host Cody Rich talk about Rosie tactics in Western Oregon and Washington. Remi Warren talks briefly about the Rosie hunting in Alaska.

This stuff is great! Jason next time your on the show I would like to hear you demonstrate the  call sounds. Lip bawls, estress whines, locate bugle vs. Challenge. I understand it will put you on the spot and be hard to translate over a phone call but with some editing magic it could be recorded outdoors, added to the podcast in the appropriate area and would really take this to the next level.

Kudos to Cody Rich for putting together this content for all of us to study, enjoy and keep us motivated about September year round. If you are a experienced elk hunter there is bound to be tips and tricks or just general reaffirmation of your tactics. If you are a newer hunter and you want to get the basics or speed up the elk; hunting, calling, scouting learning curve you just hit the jackpot of elk Intel!

Get in mountain shape, hunt all day, be aggressive, and aim true!

Thanks!!!  The hardest part for me and Cody is coming up with original content not stuff that has been beat to death...but we inevitably end up talking about some of the same stuff.

We will most likely be doing another one in a couple weeks and talk more about preparation, food, camp, kill kit, etc....  Cory Miller and myself are also working on doing another videocast  with the gritty bowmen.

Good info on there! A new bowhunter could shave years of experience off if they'd listen, understand, and implement what you were saying. Every bit of that was learned by mistakes you've made enough times to finally get the hint.

New content ideas:
Where to call from and where not
Hunting 9am to 4pm and how it differs
Wallow strategies
Watering hole strategies
Why/when you should spike camp close to a road
Precisely when, how and why thermals move
Pack-style selection
When to draw
When to shoot and not shoot a bull
Where to shoot a big bull versus a deer, and where not to
Calling strategies for the week nothing is talking
When to hunt elk like a whitetail
Use of game bags
Quartering versus boning and when to do each
Using a compass and gps to pinpoint a bull
Importance of coffee in the backcountry
Intercepting elk versus calling
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

"Importance of coffee in the backcountry"

Now this is one I really need to hear!   :chuckle:
I've had it mildly, and I've hunted with a guy who had it very bad. Caffeine withdrawal is not easy on the body at all. I hiked out several miles to get him some instant coffee; he wasn't going to make it out on his own. No-Doz pulls work, too.

Yep. When i first started hunting away from the conveniences I didn't realize I was going to get caffeine headaches. So we since altered the breakfast plan and chocolate covered espresso beans seem to work for me.
