Help with solo UL tent
« on: July 05, 2015, 11:55:44 AM »
All of my bear hunting is off trail back country stuff so a UL tent is a must but I like to have room in my tent for my pack and gear for those rainy west side times so a little extra rm is nice. My current tent is a Coleman Cobra 1998? that I moded years ago (reduced vestibules) from 2 sides to 1 and only 10" for wet boots. My only real problem with it is its a 1 pole tent a 38" high hoop at shoulder area so when wet from rain the fly sags over foot area and contacts the tent mesh causing some drips. Total packed wt for this tent is
3lbs 4oz w/27.4sf of area. My problem is is there a tent with 2 hoops that doesn't weigh more but has 2 hoops to keep fly off tent?
Requirements: high enough to sit up in, fit pack in and no-seeum mesh so should I mod a sm. hoop to my current outfit? OR....
ALPS has some close but they are smaller and  heavier.

How about a mountain smith LT?
Lightweight,  great price,  and decent room.
I love mine for that style hunting

Six Moons Designs Lunar Solo.  My favorite so far.  2 lbs.  I (6-4) can sit up in it!

I love my Big Agnes Copper SpurUL 2. 3 1/2 # with 2 doors and vestibules. I keep my muzzy or bow in the tent with boots in 1 vestibule and pack in the other
The mountains are calling and I must go

Well if you like the tent you have. Why not take it to a canvas shop and have them sew a light weight loop in the middle of the fly where it sags? :dunno: Than just run a small cord to a stake or tree to keep the fly from sagging when wet.

Wow I am really impressed by the BA Copper Spur UL1 its very comparable in size and very much a 3 season tent and still 12oz lighter than the Cobra 3.25# BA CS 2.5# I'm sure I could find it less than $369. thats where it starts to hurt$ so for the sake of economy I will research adding a sm. hoop and see what the wt gain comes out to first.

It sounds like you're lookin for a little more room. I'd never want a 1 man tent for myself. You'll have no extra room for your gear at all. I wouldn't look at anything other than a 2 man. Sub 3 pounds and good quality you can probably find something in the $200 range that would work great.
Take a good look at the Big Agnes Fly Creek tents. Front entry rather than side entry but very  similar to the copper spur otherwise and less money.

I have the copper spur ul 1 I'm 6' and sit up no problem. very water proof, vents great, light, easy to set up. it's hard to find a free standing tent that weighs less and without going to a tarp or tent without a floor. you will not be disappointed with this tent.

I checked out their site last night and saw they have a redesigned version of the contrail, looks like I'm gonna have to sell mine to get it.

Why don't you run trekking poles?
