Peaches and lots of Cougars?
« on: July 12, 2015, 10:23:57 PM »
So after drawing Peaches tag I been spending time over there to learn the area and I"m finding a lot of cougar sign and have seen 2 cougars already.. Many trails littered with elk tracks have cat prints, and fresh scat? For those who are more knowledgable of gmu 346 is this the norm? Does it have something it do with the calving?

I've seen more cougars in 328, 335, 336, 340, 346...than anywhere else. Where there's elk, there'll be lots of cats

That's when I'll start hunting cats in Peaches.  Didn't relive I would have this much fun when I drew.

Ok I wasn't expecting this type of activity. Where I hunt in 328 there are lots of elk and I don't see this much sign, not to say there not around.

I'm seeing fresh scat with elk and deer hair in it!

I had a big cat walk into me at 20 yards 2 years ago GMU 342. Heard of several sightings over the last few years. The reality is....the cougar population is way out of control.

Not for sure but I seen something on the news saying they have increased the max harvest numbers in those general areas.
What I have found to work well is a bottle of 2 buck chuk an old tavern jacket and a few compliments.......it bring them in every time.

Cougars aren't too bad until you hear a growl come out of the dark timber right next to the trail when you have nothing to protect yourself with.  That'll make the hair stand up.  Yeah, there are quite a few cats in the area.  You can usually tell by how skittish the animals are being.

call, get the wind right, sneak around, sound like an elk, smell like an elk, and you just may fill that tag for a cougar and an elk.

Thats my plan
I like cougar meat , when you call one in dont get in a hurry, they wont run.............usually.
