578 crowds?
« on: August 04, 2015, 07:11:05 PM »
For you that hunt or have hunted 578 during modern elk season is it crowded ? I see on the harvest report that there where 580+ hunters last year . Do you see people everywhere you go or are you just seeing people every now and then ?

Not to mention that there is a lot of private property and timber lands that are no longer open to the public to hunt on.

Thanks , we'll head to a different unit .

You'll be hard pressed to find a unit that has a lot of elk that doesn't have a lot of people in the accessible areas.

have seen hunters in vehicles line the roadways around the wildlife preserve, just waiting for the migrations~ always got a kick out of that.... 578 not what it was when it was an any area... the big kill on Adams a few years back hurt this area.

I really wasn't asking for elk hunting . It is one of the areas that we are looking at for deer hunting the first 2 week of Nov. . When I looked at the number of elk hunters in that area for modern it crossed my mind that it may be a bit crowded . My wife has the raffle blacktail tag and she would like to find a good buck and enjoy the hunt , we have 3 areas in mind . I think we will cross 578 off the list . Thanks for the info , it will save us some gas

I think there are good deer areas in 578 that have no elk, so no elk hunters. So I wouldn't cross it off my list just for that reason.

That fire is not anywhere close to the gmu 578. Its on the Yakima Indian Rez.

It has been and is on DNR land/GPNF on the north end of the klick unit.  About a mile east of Aiken lava bed.

Cold creek is a ways west of that fire... have hunted generally the area for years.. Tribes don't hunt much around our season on boarder areas and inside nation area, helps to push the game into the "private tribal hunting areas for "harvest" later....   this fire could have a similar but opposite effect......

when the major fire happened a few years ago and the state closed area for almost a year, I was told it was for my protection with trees falling... the fellow on the phone said "wont be any elk in there anyway, the fire has driven them out".... asked if he wanted pictures of the freshly beatup game trails traveling back into the smoldering areas to correct what he was saying... crickets...

The fire is shifting again into the GMU at the north end.  I live here and I have been watching it.  I was one of the first to respond to this fire but we got turned around because it was on BIA at that time.  It is into the old burn and has even gone clear around it.  This fire started Monday night from lightning.  Not going to be a good hunt this year.
