Help me pick a new rifle
« on: August 06, 2015, 08:38:58 PM »
After I get a little more cash together I'll be buying a new rifle.  It needs to be chambered for 300 win mag.
I would like to spend $600-$700 but for the right rifle will go to $900... Not a penny more!
I would prefer to have a synthetic stock.
I would prefer to not use a detached magazine but that's not a deal killer.
Stainless would be nice but not required.
Would really like to have it made in America but know that's hard to come by now days.
My biggest concern is accuracy obviously...

I've been looking at Remington model 700 sps stainless, tikka t3 lite stainless, and tikka t3 super lite stainless.
What are your thoughts, good or bad, on those?  Any other recommendations.

Cabelas has them for $700

I am partial to savage. 116 fhss aluminum bedded synthetic stock, floor plate, stainless. It's not in production anymore but iif you can find it, it should run under $700.

If you don't mind dbm FCSS, bear Hunter or in bluing fcns, long range Hunter.

I like T3 lites but in 300 they kick like a mule.

What glass do you plan on putting in the gun?

Remington 700 stainless SPS.
Do you have one? What do you like about it? What do you not like?  The sps is what I'm kind of leaning towards...

I'd find an older 700 and buy a bell and Carlson stock, you'd come in way under your 900. Take the left over funds a save for a vx3 3.5x10

Yes, I picked one up from A local Bi-Mart 4 or 5 years back. Shot well with 165gr Accubonds and RL- 22 powder. It was the stainless SPS, it was 425.00 plus tax. Bi-Mart still has great deals on them, I believe they are still in the same price range. I may pick up another I had the original one I purchased worked over by Benchmark Barrels and it ended up as a 30" .338 Edge.

Why .300 win mag?  Reloading? Magnum?

I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

I like the availability of ammo... Plus three of the four guys I hunt modern deer with have 300 win mags so it's nice having the same ammo if something happened... That being said, I'm not against going with a different round provided it has approx the same knock down power and trajectory and it's not hard to come by.

Never heard a bad thing about Tikka accuracy though don't care for the feel. 700s can be hit or miss on accuracy but easily be upgraded in parts. Haven't seen an A or X bolt that wouldn't shoot well.

I bought a new SPS this winter in .270.  I'm very happy with the rifle.  It was VERY accurate out of the box, even with factory ammo.

Savage has my vote for OUT OF THE BOX ACCURACY!!!  Can't go wrong with any mentioned, but you should really look at the Savages.  I own a couple  ;) so I speak with 100% confidence.

I have a 700 xcr II and its ok. The trigger is nice but the stocks suck. but I have 3 browning a bolts and they will out shot my model 700 all day long. one tikka t3 that will shot with the brownings but it will cost you a stock. They are hollow and if you by chance drop it or bump something well stalking a deer or elk. game over. but they are a really nice rilfe.
