It was my understanding that they fixed the unsupported barrel issue with the Gen4 models?

I really like the XTP'S im my 1911's but have heard that a hard cast or FMJ is better for bear since expansion=limited penetration?

I just read that they did support the barrel more now but the back of brass that hangs out is the solid part so you should OK, as long as you stay within pressure specs.. Bears are tough but not THAT tough!! Lol

  I have seen a wounded bear killed by a Glock 19/ 9mm, one shot at about 10 feet, in the head. (wounded by a 338 mag,)
I have seen a wounded bear shot 3 times in the neck, at the base of the skull, with a 44 mag. 240 grain softpoints, Winchester load. Had to be shot with 30/06 to kill it. Bullets penetrated about 3 inches.
I have seen a bear killed at about 2 feet in the dark using a flashlight, 357 mag 158 grain HP, one shot in the head.
there is a lot to know about killing.

Personally I think you should be able to finish an animal with a .22 pistol.

I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I was just curious if I missed something. But this pistol is legal. It has a 4 inch barrel and is over .24 caliber.

A lot of good info here but not much in regards to my original question - What is your 10mm bear / defense load?

Clarification: I will be carrying this as a sidearm during archery season; not my primary weapon.

In Alaska this past year I carried Double Tap 200 grain wide nose hard cast in my Glock 20. From my reading and research before I went up there that seemed to be the popular choice with people up there carrying 10mm for bear defense. It was either Buffalo bore or Double Tap 200 or 220 grain. I tried both brands in both 200 and 220 grain and the 200s fed best in my gun.

I'm running 180XTP handloads in mine.  I looked into 200XTP's, but from all I have seen (ballistic gelatin tests etc) you don't gain much and expansion/penetration is about equal.  Plus I can run the 180 grain bullets in my .40 S&W handloads.

Any issues with lead fouling? I may just invest in 100 rounds of this and load lighter (read - less expensive) rounds for routine practice
