How to paint a rifle stock
« on: January 13, 2009, 03:57:22 PM »
I need some information on how to paint a wood stock. I had to add several inches to my sons 243 remington 788 stock and the joint really shows.  We've thought about just replacing it but the gun really shoots well and we hate changing things. When I added this piece on I thought that we would eventually paint the stock. I completely stripped all the finish and then glued and screwed the piece on. Then instead of using oil I used fiberglass resin to seal the stock. So now I think that with a light rough up it will be ready to paint. What kind of primer, paint etc. I see a lot of painted stocks finished with a webbing paint. Does this spray out of a can or do you need a special sprayer.  I've been off work for 4 weeks due to a slip on ice and a badly injured knee and I'm feeling like I should be doing some of these things while stuck at home.  Thanks for any info.

take a picture please and post it.

many different things can be done instead of just painting it. if the new wood is clear and fits nice you can clearcoat after stains and it would look nice depending on the seam. the seam can also be filled with clear wood filler and then apply the same stuff they coat hardwood flooring with for a really durable finish.

Otherwise use some fiber filled bondo to hide the seam, then paint it. Home Depot has Camo paints.
TANNERITE needed for target practice on opening day of each hunting season.
