Found Your Buck - Spokane
« on: September 16, 2015, 08:01:13 AM »
If you shot a buck yesterday afternoon/evening just SW of Spokane city limits and couldn't find it, let me know and I will give you its location... maybe this should be in the lost and found?

I spotted this in a neighbors yard this morning.  The family has already moved, so the house isn't occupied.

Did you try and save the meat at least?

That’s a shame.  He appears to be gut shot and starting to bloat.

Did you try and save the meat at least?

The thought crossed my mind to load it up in my pickup and take it home to try and salvage, but that would be illegal, and I am not about to risk it.

For all of those wondering, I did call and report this to WDFW.  Hopefully they will make it right.  If they called me back and said I could try to salvage the meat I would pack up from work and be there in a heartbeat to salvage as much as I could. I dispatched and salvaged a  doe that had been hit by a car while on my honeymoon near Sandpoint last September, so I am all about saving meat when I can legally do so.

My original post was mostly sarcastic, but I thought there might be a long shot that someone might see this and actually know something about it and be able to have the hunter go claim his/her buck.

What is a shame is that WDFW will fine the holy crap out of you if you tried to do the right thing and put this animal to use. Sure it's ok if you put your tag on it. It always makes me sad to see fresh killed deer that have to go to waste such as a fresh road kill. If a deer ruins my car why am I not allowed to take the backstraps if they are in decent enough shape? anyway, I could go on about this all day. Hope you find the shooter.

Why? He is trying to find the shooter and tag holder. Seems like this was the ethical and moral thing to do. Why shouldn't you try to help get a tag on this buck and get it to the shooter? I'm sure whoever shot it would like to have it. I really don't understand your logic here.

Fair point.
My logic was concerning the Anti's and what they would turn this into.  Nothing more.

The temperature overnight at my house got down to 42 degrees, so if it is taken care of quickly the meat may be salvageable. I guess unless I hear from someone on here, then it is in WDFW's hands now.  This does suck though.... I hate seeing animals go to waste.  If I had an archery deer tag I would have seriously considered putting it on this buck if I could have done so legally.

Too bad it was not in the Clockum. Sounds like all you need is a tag and if you find a dead animal you just throw that baby on there and you are in business. Heck, grandma might have to buy her first deer tag this year and wouldn't you know it she got a buck 10 minutes later.....

I hate that the department that is in charge of caring for our wildlife is often also to blame for wasted game.

I thought WDFW or the Sherriff would take them to a processor and donate the meat?  Is that just an urban legend?  They should just start a program where you can drop them off at an approved processor and they will process it and get the meat to people who can use it.  The state can reimburse them later.  Of course the entire animal has to be donated, I'm sure a few bad apples would just go crazy and shoot everything if they could drop off the carcass and keep the antlers.

Good on you for trying to reunite the hunter with their deer!
I am sure someone is looking and hopefully they see this.

Too hot for that deer to be any good to eat. With the temperature and intestines still in the deer, that thing is toast. But it was definetly worth the try.

Of course cooled quickly is best, but I've had this experience as well.  Now, if it was gutshot, lived for a while circulating that yuck through it's system, and then sat somewhat warmish overnight, different story.

My 2013 bull was liver/gut shot and I had to leave him over night. He was fine. My buck this year was liver shot left him overnight he was fine. The tenderloins are no good after a night like that but the rest of the meat should be ok. In fairness though I have a meat cooler so I am able to get the meat cooled very quickly after I find the animals. I also found them first thing in the AM. In total I have had to let 3 animals sit over night and they have all turned out fine. My buck this year was the longest as I didn't find him until about 11 am. It was pretty hot an honestly I was worried. It turned out ok though but I think I pushed it as far as I could.

I was thinking the meat is probably fine.  Looks like I am not alone in that regard.  I like to find animals ASAP though and have found that there is still nothing that beats the Coleman Double Mantle Powerhouse white gas lantern for that job.

It all depends ive left them and come back, they have smelled rotten by 9am and Ive had to eat my tag instead of deer meat. I haven't lost to many deer 2 in 20 years, both in early September when it was hot even in the evening. IMHO though just the smell of that meat would make me sick, and who wants to eat foul smelling meat? :dunno:, but not me.
