Absolute BS!  Just a rumor started by a very ignorant person.  They do euthanize elk when needed.  Don't make hunters look ignorant by perpetuating a rumor based on hearsay.

Saw it in the Winston during early archery. Watched a half dozen cows get blasted one ridge over. It was sickening.
