I was hoping they would have made it on the shorter case used for the .257, .270 & 7mm rounds.  But I guess in order to beat the competition (.26 Nosler, .264 Win, etc) they had to market it on the full length case.  I for one don't care much for cartridges with such extreme overbore.

A friend of mine built a 6.5x300WSM. He shot his bear with it and he said it made a mess out of the exit side...
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Did weatherby come out with this cartridge now? This is something I considered building for my last rifle, but didn't see the need and just went with a 6.5x284.

Never been around the 6.5-300 Wby but when the STW craze first came out my dad had a 7-300wby built and it shot real well.

IMO, with the available bullets at the time, I don't think it got the best use of its case capacity because there wasn't the heavy for caliber bullets that they have now.

One of the downsides to using large sized cases with some of these smaller bores, is you really need to run barrels that are typically in the 28ish range to get the real performance out of them or they, often, just shoot slightly faster than some of the others with quite a bit less case capacity.

Also, often the accuracy loads are right around the same, give or take 100fps, as the stuff with the smaller cases, too.

I'm a big fan of the 6.5's and I looked into having a 6.5 built off a necked down 338 Lapua case.  Talked with Kirby Allen, who loves making things go fast, about it and not even doing an improved shoulder, it still just didn't pencil out, at least with the bullets that are currently available, it didn't.  Now, if Berger ever made a 180gr Hybrid 6.5 that could possible change things.

Was thinking it was a little overbore and might see some throat erosion faster... Seems like they are making a rifle more every niche, no doubt it'd be a laser!

And I think Travis w/RBros gets right at 3200fps out of the 140's with the 26in barrel 6.5-06 Ack Imp he builds.  My dad has a 6.5-06AI that is long throated for the Berger 140's, not built by RBros, and he gets just under 3250 with Travis's Retumbo load but his also has a 28in tube, too.

I think I read they are getting just under 3400 fps with 140's in the 6.5-300Wby and 200fps is certainly nothing to sneeze at but it's also doing it with a case that has 30% more case capacity than a 6.5-06 AI, too.  That's a huge increase in capacity for only 200fps.

I would have thought they learned something with the 30-378 but guess not.

Pretty much my thoughts, still a wicked round but for a working wage I make no way.  Those 6.5-06 are pretty sweet rifles, just had a rifle built two years ago and it was between that and the traditional .280 Ackley which ended up what I had built.

What do you get out of the .280 Ackley?

With 140 berger haven't ran a load up to hot but accuracy wise its at the 3200 mark. 162 Amax chrono'ed about 3080 and my 168 Bergers are a little slower at 2850..

How long of a tube are you running to get 3000 fps out of 160's? Mine likes 140 AB's pushed by a full dose of H4350 but It's only doing 3100 according to my chrono out of a 24" lilja.

25 inch bartlein pipe carbon wrapped with seekins brake.  Using a pretty stiff load of h4831sc. The chrono'ed velocity is correct on the 162s but haven't shot at distance to see if the 140s velocity matches the dope chart yet
