pyrodex 50/50 and number 11 caps

Just like the post says do you guys feel the number 11 caps will ignite the pyrodex pellets ok ? or should I scrap the idea and run loose or go to a musket cap ? . this gun was set sighted in with two pellets and a hornady 250grain sabot . gonna shoot it sat and see .

Hodgdon says it's okay to use Pyrodex pellets with #11 or musket caps, but not Triple 7 pellets. I've never used pellets, but my uncle is using Pyrodex pellets in his Knight with #11's. It's working for him most of the time. All except for the one time he shot at a deer last year and it didn't ignite the powder. Not sure what the reason was for that.

 Some people say that the number 11 In the German brand is hotter than a musket cap I'm not sure I believe that but I've had very good luck using a musket Lighting both triple seven pellets and  pyrodex  with a good I think you will be fine !

I've been using the Pyrodex pellets with the #11 cap in my Traditions Vortex with good ignition when the cap ignites.  I just changed to the musket cap and nipple to get the cap to fire consistently, haven't shot it yet.  That being said, I have never had an issue with the Pyrodex pellets not igniting.

Switch to loose powder. I've ran the Pyrodex pellets and had way to many misfires or hang fires, with musket caps and #11, to feel comfortable ever using them again. Since I switched to loose and RWS 1075's (German caps), I've not even had a hang fire and it seems to ignite faster. I'll also never use musket caps again since they're not as weather resistant as #11's and a damp musket cap cost me a bull a few years ago....plus, 777 is so much easier to clean. Pyrodex is super corrosive and stinks lol

Steer clear of cci and Remington #11 caps and you won't ever have an issue.  My dad still shoots #11's along with several other buddies, and those are the brands i see have issues the most.  Stick to the german caps and your golden.  Just had this conversation with bullblaster last night, and since I started shooting smoke pole 20 years ago, I have never had a single misfire, and i shoot A LOT!  Like 150-200 rounds before season.  Poor cleaning practices account for the vast majority of misfires I think.

Suggestion make sure you are using #11 Magnum cap or RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075+ caps.  Both of these caps produce the same heat as a Musket cap.  Regular #11 caps will most often ignite pyro pellets but for hunting I would use the hooter caps.

There is a problem though... CCI #11 Magnum caps are very hard to find right now - there are some  #11 Winchester Magnum caps to be found and they are suppose to be CCI #11 Mags built for the Winchester Brand - I have never used them so I can not speak to them.

Also make sure you are loading the black end of the pellets down the bore first so the caps ignite the BP end of the pellet.

I would still suggest you got to loose powder if you have any concerns. I would also use T7-3f powder in any percussion gun.

I've been using American Pioneer Powder for a couple years now and really like it due to the fact it's clean. This year I'm gonna try Jim Shockey's Gold by APP. Anyone ever use it? I know it's probably a bunch of hype but what the heck.

Go with tried and true REAL black powder.      Bass pro in tacoma has it.  You have to ask them to get it from out back, fed regulations on storage.  Ellensburg has it too

Other shooters can use what ever they like.
But I'll never buy another Pyrodex or Triple 7 pellet as long as I live.
They are harder to ignite, hence the tiny bit of real black they put on the end of pyrodex pellets, and that for Triple 7 pellets they only recommend 209 shot shell primers. Loose powder pre-measured in a speed loader of some kind that seals well is just as fast as pellets. Plus you can really dial in a load, you may find out your gun shoots lights out with 85, 95, or 105 grains of loose powder. How would you ever know if all you have are 50 grain equivelent pellets?
