I bought some Cabelas lightweight pack able MT050 raingear a couple years ago. sometimes I feel damp, but figured it might be either sweating or rain gifting in from the neckline an sleeves. I don't like wearing hoods because it effects being able to hear. This week I went muzzy elk hunting in heavy rain and heavy cover. I now have no doubts, rain gets through it. And to make matters worse it gets really heavy when wet and takes a long time to dry out. I'm pretty disappointed in the performance. Does anyone know of any of the spray on water repellents that work? I feel they really missed the boat with the outer layer.

You may want to go to truly waterproof rain gear for heavy rain, meaning non-gore tex. Something like Helly Hansen Impertech, which does not have an outer layer that soaks up water.

I actually have some Helly Hansen that I think is great which I use for fishing. I should have taken it along too. I never expected it to be perfect, but for what they charge and what they claim it doesn't live up to its billing. If I'd bought it this year it would be going back Monday

Take a look at KUIU. Pretty spendy but a its worth it. I hunted in rain all day Wednesday and the only place I got a little wet was at the pit zips I had open when climbing out of a canyon. Great gear.
The mountains are calling and I must go

I've never had MT050 leak. It is possible that perspiration is causing the dampness. If not Cabelas should exchange it.

It also can feel wet in places where it can't breathe.  Like under pack straps.
Nikwax wash in works really good to repel water.the spray stuff works ok too

Is there a chemical scent with either the spray on or wash Nikwax?  I'm going to buy one or the other this week due to the same results as the OP with a different goretex type material.. I forget the brand

WOOL.WOOL.WOOL, is the one and only BEST for hunting in wet weather. I've hunted all over the westside and eastside and ALWAYS wore WOOL. This high tech stuff is all hype if you ask me..
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I have some that is at least 20 years old.  Not the packable stuff though.  It's still my most water proof rain gear.  Semi-packable stuff from UA is pretty darn good too, but makes me sweat like a pig if I have it zipped tight.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I have the packable and it keeps me dry.  :dunno:

I also have the MT050 and am very happy with it. The only place it leaked unfortunately, is the zipper on the pants. Nothing like being dry and warm and having wet junk. I also wash mine with Techwash whenever I wash it and it seems to function just fine. This is my 3rd season with it.

Too warm if you ask me.  And heavy when really wet.
