Resident tags for out of state military. Oregon
« on: October 24, 2015, 12:23:39 PM »
I was just told by a guy I work with that Oregon will sell all active duty military resident tags regardless of whether you are stationed in Oregon or not. Unless I'm reading it wrong it seems like he was right. That's a great opportunity to save some money if you are. I was looking at buying tags in Montana next year but this seems like too good of a deal to pass up and it will give me a chance to try hunting out of state. Any active duty guys here actually bought resident tags in Oregon?

Be really careful I have heard of people getting into trouble here when doing that.  I would seriously check with WDFW if you are also hunting here as a resident so that you do not get into a bad bind.

This is what I was looking at, it looks to me that Oregon is just offering the non resident tags at the resident price. i didn't think about if that would affect buying tags in Washington tho. I'll have to look into that.

Is it a resident tag or just resident price? Huge difference

Key words are "you must be an Oregon resident" stationed outside of Oregon.

I think what Runamok was saying that if you buy a resident tag in another state, you can't buy one in WA, too. Is that right, Run?

Hunt and fish in Oregon at resident prices as of Jan. 1, 2014

All non-resident active members of the uniformed services may purchase licenses, tags and permits at resident rates beginning Jan. 1, 2014. The Oregon State Legislature and Governor Kitzhaber passed and signed House Bill 2252 in 2013, making this change. It applies to active duty and reservists from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, or reservists currently stationed at any base in Oregon, the U.S. or any foreign country; the commissioned corps of NOAA, and Public Health Service of the US Department of Health and Human Services detailed with the Army or Navy of the United States.

Controlled deer and elk tags for active members of Armed Forces on leave in Oregon

In 2012, ODFW began a program that gives tags to active members of Armed Forces (News Release).

Each district can provide up to 20 controlled deer and 20 controlled elk tags, though tags provided may not exceed 10 percent of total hunt tag numbers.

How the program works
•You must be active member of Armed Forces and an Oregon resident, but stationed outside Oregon, to get a tag.
•Contact the district office where you want to hunt (in advance of the hunt if possible).
•Be prepared to show an active duty military ID, valid Oregon resident hunting license, and copy of current leave papers to document you are stationed outside of Oregon.
•Tags are provided on a first come, first serve basis.
•Members of military pay standard price for tag, but pay no additional fee for purchasing tag after the deadline.

Those are two separate things, resident prices and controlled hunts. The way I read it is for controlled hunts for military personnel you need to be an Oregon resident stationed outside of Oregon. Under resident prices it doesn't say anything about being an Oregon resident. That would be a given... I'm a WA resident stationed outside of Washington - of course I can hunt WA at WA resident prices.

That's why I'm wondering if it is a resident tag I can get in Oregon, vs resident tag prices. "All non-resident active members of the uniformed services may purchase licenses, tags and permits at resident rates beginning Jan. 1, 2014" says at resident rates. It doesn't say resident tag. But it could be worded poorly and mean either.

A telephone call would clear up the ambiguity.

It also says you must be "on leave IN Oregon."

I called earlier this year, all she could do was read it without specifying what exactly it meant. Gave no indication whether was resident rates or tags.

Walking a thin line with what? Calling ODFW to get clarification on whether they offer resident rates, as stated, or resident tags? How is seeking what it really means walking a thin line? Beating the system? They're offering "All non-resident active members of the uniformed services may purchase licenses, tags and permits at resident rates" - so how is that trying to beat the system? By taking them up on their offer?

I would call to try and clear it up it I'm currently deployed. I sent them an email and the response was that active duty military get resident rates in the state of Oregon. They didn't specify if you had to be stationed there or not. From the website it simply says it applies to "all active nonresident in the military" and specifies "currently stationed in Oregon, the us or any foreign country".

So from the looks of it you are getting a non resident tag at a resident price. Seems like a really good deal and opportunity to hunt out of state.

I just received another email from Oregon fish and game and they were very helpful. They explicitly said that you don't not have to be stationed in the state of Oregon to qualify. You can purchase the nonres tags at the resident price and can actually just do it online providing you have the right paperwork and military ID.
