With two vertical grips on a pistol, is this an "Any Other Weapon"?

The bolt action pistols are hard to classify sometimes even by BATFE agents. I've been told that they're everything from SBRs, AOWs, pistols or rifles. That was all the same gun from about 6 different people. I've had them registered as rifles, pistols and AOWs.

You could make a convincing argument that in the case of that particular XP-100 the forward grip is actually the primary grip since that's where the trigger is located. The rear grip is just a little something extra. I don't know of any laws against a "vertical rear grip".

Bolt action, pump action, or semi auto. If the barrel is less than 16" and the over all length of the firearm is less than 26". You then fall into the pistol or short barrel weapons category. Once that happens, you have an entirely two different sets of laws. Which is no butt stock and no second vertical hand grip. For a pistol. In realty, it is stupid to think a second grip makes a bit of difference as to how the weapon preforms. Or how the shooter holds it or what ever reason the ATF has decided. But it is the ATF ruling. Which means without due process. It becomes an automatic law.

I have to maybe do some more research but I asked the question because I am unclear about the second grip. Does the law say that the second grip has to be forward of the primary grip? Does this example fall into that definition? I have never seen a grip for any pistol even close to that.

I was trying to be light hearted with my initial response, but that didn't seem to work.

This stock is a custom one offered by gunstocks inc. It's the same concept as the old Fajen push/pull Contender stocks. If you've spent much time behind a specialty pistol you'd see the useful applications for a stock like this. It serves the same purpose as a shooting sling on a rifle in that it adds stability. Without a muzzle brake it can be difficult to maintain a good sight picture for fast follow up shots or spotting hits with this style of gun. By using a push/pull grip the shooter has much better control of the gun.

Theses stocks aren't something you see every day but then again, how many Xp-100s, Savage Strikers, Weatherby CFPs or Witchita pistols do you see when you pull up to the local range? To me this style of stock makes more sense and is less of a loophole in ATF regs than a Sig brace will ever be. I've never seen anybody take an XP with a dual grip stock and shoulder it like a rifle. I've also never seen anyone use a Sig brace the way they were "intended" to be used.

"Firearm restriction area" special
