My 2008 Buck
«
on:
January 21, 2009, 12:10:27 AM »
Hi all,
This is my first post here. I have been reading the archives for a few months now....I must say, great bunch of people here.
Not much of a story to this buck unfortunately.
I spent the majority of the day hunting a piece of property that I have hunted for many years. After seeing no deer and very little sign, I decided to try another area that is close by but haven't really hunted. I went on a very short hike up this ridge to glass some semi open area. I wasn't expecting much.
I walked around this knob to look for some sign.... pretty disappointing though not unexpected. So I walk back down to the road and toward my truck... after about 5 minutes here's this buck coming down the hill... We see each other about the same time, he spooks and runs up the hill and stops at about a hundred yards. He's behind some small pines and raking the trees or shaking his head I cant quite tell. I'm pretty sure that I spooked him off of that little knob. So he's facing broadside and to the right I can see his head and about four inches of neck. Hmm..... well I've had my share of missed opportunities because I was waiting for the absolute perfect shot. I'm not one to take a head shot or a poorly placed shot and risk wounding an animal. I figure that this is my only opportunity to take this buck. I hold on his neck just below his head... Boom! He disappears. This all happens in about sixty seconds. I make it up the hill and he's down. This is the closest "almost" miss I've ever had. Spined him. Right where i was aiming... zero meat damage. Very lucky or good...I like to think both. 1 inch to the left and I would have missed. One shot with my 6mm did the trick. He was a very pretty buck just starting to get a swell. Loads of fat on him too.
Sorry about the terrible pic. The others from where the deer lay, were taken in dappled sunlight, improperly exposed and even worse.
I've got more pics and stories I'll try to post soon.
Thanks for again for the great forum!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.... Nope I'm not going to mount him... doing a euro though. Waiting for some more room. The Ram story is kind of long and I've yet to type it. I'll get it on here in the next few days

Nice buck! Sounds like this one could have easily been in the "one that got away" post. Way to get it done and a little luck never hurts.
