Worth going out this weekend?
«
on:

Trying to decide if I'm going out this weekend...between the flooding and torrential downpours not sure it would be worth it. Was thinking either Randle or Bear River units...any thoughts?

It's ALWAYS worth going hunting. You'll only regret it later if you don't at least try.

You can't get better westside elk hunting weather than this! If we can just figure out how to get out of Vancouver - we're gone.

Man I would be all over this weekend. Get yourself a break in the weather and maybe a little glimpse of sun and animals will be moving for sure. They've been hunkered down all week and are dying to get up and move for a few days.

Always worth it, I had my hunting partner bail so I am headed out alone for Muzzy. I have only driven through the unit one, but I won't shoot an elk in my living room. I was looking at 3 maybe 4 days, I think I'll parse it down a little. Could use a hotel req or stay away for in the aberdeen area. I expect to be in NR.

I think I'll be out in the weather as long as it's not too crazy. You'll be able to move around like a ninja.
Just make sure a tree doesn't fall on you.

I thought I looked at all the info out there and got a surprise in Randle. Road flooded and closed at the bridge southbound. Ugh.

Persistence is the only thing that kills elk. I saw a herd with a good 250ish 5pt in it today...working somewhere in Bear River.

The worse the weather is - the better the hunting is! I've gotten deer and elk in pouring down rain on the wet side and I've gotten deer and elk while hunting in blizzards in Colorado. I can't imagine any better conditions to hunt in and I wouldn't ask for anything better.

From your past experiences, would you say they like to hang out in the timber or clear cuts during weather like this? Friend and I have been debating on this a bit. I say timber, he says clear cuts.

lots of wind look in clear cuts. Elk don't seem to like timber in the wind, seems to interfere with their ability to hear, see, and smell danger. I also find them in the middle of clear cuts during heavy snow. Everyone has their own experience and beliefs. A couple buddies completely disagree with me on this. I have killed 13 elk with my bow, with twice that many opportunities. They are still trying to kill their first
Try both see what you find.

If there is wind, I usually find them in re-prod trees (they seem to like the 15'-20' high stuff). If there is not wind, they can be in big timber or out in the open.
They know that in high wind the branches and/or trees can fall on them.
I've also found that in foggy conditions, they prefer to be out in the open.
